Hi everyone,

I am having major problems with my Windows install.

I have Macrium Reflect backups, however, when they were created I had a different video card.

If I restore one of these backups, what will happen? Will Windows work? Will I be able to uninstall the old driver and install the new one?

I had a store install the card and driver and also do a couple of other things on my PC.

Thanks for any help!

It's hard to tell with a store having made the changes.

On my computer... if I had an old Nvidia card, and replaced it a while back with a new Nvidia card... restoring from a backup wouldn't really be a problem.
If the old card was AMD maybe and the new card is Nvidia... there would be a few more problems.

For an answer to your question we would need to know your computer specs, and what the old and new cards were.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?

Windows is generally good at sorting out new drivers to use when it finds itself running on new hardware. It has a lot of standard drivers included, and usually will have one to suit. I have successfully restored an image made on an Intel based machine to one with AMD hardware.

At worst I would expect Windows to use the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter driver until it can go on-line to find a more suitable driver. It should do all this automatically.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. I have replaced drives in my new computers with drives from my older computers and they worked. I do recommend making a backup image first.

Are the issues you are having a result of the store working on the computer? If so, they should be the first contact you make to try and sort things out. Also, if you intend to solve the issues yourself, posting the specifics about your issues would be beneficial in determining what steps you should take. A system restore won't help if the problems are hardware related.
