Solved Right-Click Menu

Hello - me again!

I want to be able to right-click on an image and select the Paint.net app to edit it - just like I used to be able to in Windows 10. I cannot see any way to modify the right click options.

At the moment, when I right click on an image, the only Edit With option is Clipchamp (see screenshot below). I want to replace that with Paint.net. I know I can take the "Open With" option, but on double-clicking that will then open images in Paint.net for viewing. I just want it for editing.

Is there a way of modifying the right-click menu for the Edit With option?

If you click on "Open With" you should see Paint.net. Once you open with Paint.net, you should be able to edit to your heart's content.

I just did a test run and it gives me a selection of all my graphics apps. I clicked on one of them and voila!

You can also go into Settings and make Paint.net your default Graphics app.

Thanks. The default Graphics app doesn't offer Paint.net as an available option, but yes, the Open With option works. It was just that in Windows 10 I could simply select Edit in the right-click context menu and Paint.net would open as the default editor. Just another additional step I'll have to get used to. I was hoping there might be a registry hack I could use to replace Clipchamp with Paint.net

Click “show more options” And click “edit”. What does that open with?

There is no Edit option on the right click > More Options menu other than the original "Edit with Clipchamp"

I removed clipchamp so I don’t even have that context menu entry anymore. Ok create the edit manually:

Code:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

On the right-hand side double-click on Default and change the value to

"C:\YOUR_PATH_HERE\APPLICATION.exe" "%1"

Set Icon:

Code:

Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit

New > String Value > Icon > path to icon desired

Thanks, but there is no such entry listed in my registry?

because you're at "system.". scroll down way past that. looking for "systemf". and whatever isn't there, create.

Just click on the address bar which currently says 'computer\hkey_classes_root' and replace with 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command'. Press Enter.

rigsby may not have shell\edit. I don't. All he has to do is create the needed key.

OK thanks. I've found it now, but there is no extension beyond shell for edit/command, as you can see. Is it safe to create them within the shell key?

If so, I won't be able to reboot for about 90-mins because I have a full backup processing, so will report back soon after.

right click shell, choose New, choose Key, and call it edit. Right click edit and choose New, choose Key, and call it command.

Sorry folks. I get nervous when messing with the registry (yes, I've backed it up!). I've now created edit/command but what do I create now to enter the application info into?

Create a New/String value.
Double Click on default and select the program you want to use followed by %1.
Double quotes are crucial.
I use:

Code:

"D:\Program Files\IrfanView\i_view64.exe" "%1"

%1 stands for the filename you are passing as value.

To add to this, to find where Paint.net is installed search it into the taskbar, right click > Open File Location. If this opens a shortcut, right click the shortcut and click 'Open file location' once more.
Right click the .exe file of Paint.net and click Copy as path
Then paste this path in this above format..
