Windows 11
Hello to the forum,

Hope someone can help me here. A few days ago this problem appeared in Win 11 - I can open and right on a folder, context menu appears OK and can choose all options - rename, cut, copy etc for the folder. When I right click on a file in the folder no context menu appears and that folder hangs, have to force restart to close it, although while that particular folder is hung I can open another folder but the same occurs with that folder's files and so on.
I have tried fixes such as SFC Scannow and DISM.EXE.......with no success, I am tempted to reinstall Win 11 but don't really want to unless I have to or should I?
Machine is a Dell Inspiron 3881 with Windows etc. on an SSD and a HDD which I use for data.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Try a Repair Install
Download a Win 11 installation iso (don't use the one you have, it can be corrupted) mont the iso and run setup.exe.
It will reinstall Windows keeping your files and configuration.

Thank you for the reply Megahertz,

That sounds good, I'll try that later on, it's 11pm here Saturday and am a bit fed up looking at my monitor all evening attempting to fix the problem.

I'll report back with any results I get ☘️:)

Seems that it worth a try
Check this:
Thanks Tekkie Boy,
That's a very comprehensive procedure, not sure of I am brave enough to try it!
I'm just a fairly regular PC user, but not scared to try things out like replacing, upgrading etc.
Not so confident with regard to in-depth software stuff.
I should have included in the original post that if a file is on the desktop and I right click on it, the desktop hangs and I have to restart the PC to clear it. I downloaded a third party file viewer and the problem is not there, I can right click on a file and a context menu does appear, but not Win 11 type, more like Win 10!

I can understand that it looks complicated at first glance, but I have to say that @Brink tutorials are very well done and if you follow the instructions carefully, you can't go wrong.

You can also go the way suggested by @Megahertz , I'm just not sure if it fixes the problem.

Just wondering, do you have onedrive running? I have a similar issue, when it is up.

Hi to all who replied,

Thank you all for showing interest in the problem - I don't use onedrive and as I don't have great confidence in delving into software, reluctantly have decided to run Reset the PC, all is OK but it's now back to square one! I do wish though I was a bit more Tekkie with regard to fixing software issues and corresponding with forum members, feeling a bit out of my depth! I'm OK with the basics plus a bit more than a lot of friends and folks I know, which I suppose is not too bad!

Anyway, best Regards and thanks again :)

Hello on the forum again,

Further to my right click problem, I finished resetting the PC and all was good again and all my data was safe on the separate HDD.
Got very interesting from here - I had previously to resetting, copied all that was on the original desktop to a USB drive, this included a few files.
After resetting I copied all on the USB back to the desktop and shock horror the right click problem reappeared.
To cut a long story short, I had saved a .MKV video file to the desktop and by process of elimination it was the problem, deleted it and all was back to normal, if only I had realised before resetting, no harm done, reset was probably good for the PC.
Was this just a corrupted file or what? I have a few other MKV video files and they are OK

Hope this may be of some help in the future

I just had the same thing happen to me.

My context menus were acting buggy and kept saying loading and after seeing this post I realised that I had recently copied a MKV file to documents.

After deleting the file everything is working normally again.

Great to hear that, I had problems way back with MKV files, I think on that occasion I couldn't do anything with what was a corrupt file, couldn't move, delete, rename or open it, unfortunately I cannot remember what the solution was, but did fix it
