This tutorial will show you how to test the internet speed of your Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Cellular network connection in Windows 11.

Starting with Windows 11 build 26100.7922 (24H2) and 26200.7922 (25H2), and build 28000.1764 (26H1), Microsoft rolled out the ability to do built-in network speed test accessible from the taskbar. You can launch it via the Wi-Fi and Cellular Quick Settings pages or by right-clicking the network icon in the system tray. The tool opens in your default browser and supports testing Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Cellular connections. This feature helps assess network performance and supports troubleshooting.

Starting with build 26340.9767 (Experimental 26H2) for Insiders, Microsoft is making it faster and easier to check the performance of your internet connection in Windows. Windows Insiders can now run an internet speed test and see the results directly in Quick Settings, without being redirected to a browser. Start a test from the new Speed test Quick Setting, from the Wi-Fi or Cellular flyout, or by right-clicking the network icon in the system tray and selecting Test internet speed. While the test runs, Quick Settings shows its progress and results, including download speed, upload speed, and ping. Because the test runs against your active internet connection, you can quickly understand how your current connection is performing without leaving your workflow. This updated experience builds on the internet speed test Microsoft previously introduced for Windows Insiders, bringing the test and its results directly into Windows.

Any idea why?

Nope. Its release notes have:

I'm afraid not, but you could pin the app to the taskbar or Start Menu to make it easier to use the app instead.

Would take some scripting to make it launch an app instead. Can done but would be app specific and not a universal script. You CAN, however use the browser extension Redirector to make that url redirect to a different speed test url with no scripting necessary

I would have expected MS to use a better test, since speed is just a small part of diagnosing network issues.
