Put simply, there are certain legal rights one surrenders when accepting a "free upgrade" that remain intact when one pays for the same software. I'm not willing to get into the nitty-gritty of the details of such. Those are rights I'm not willing to surrender. Thus I PAY for my software. However, we're getting off-topic...

That is true, but there is one catch, you have to create a microsoft account to purchase said upgrade which negates the point of doing the upgrade in this context.

You can upgrade with a Pro key. I bought Windows 10 Pro key on some sale for like $14, and used that one to upgrade 11 Home to Pro.

It seems I needed to be more clear. Sorry about that.

IF one buys from microsoft directly then an account has to be created and personal info disclosed. If you buy from any third party such as a retail store or an online key seller, then personal info does not have to be disclosed and the upgrade can be done without a microsoft account.

That's correct, i also use offline account. You can also do a clean install of Windows once you activate Pro key on that machine, and use offline account on installation.

Well... OK, but @ 14 bucks that is almost certainly not a genuine key - but hey, MS has relaxed enforcement of WAT so much since Win 7 it's unbelievable.. I guess telemetry commercialisation is making up for the loss in revenue...so.

Well, to be fair, you agree to an end user license agreement which gives you the right to use the software under their terms and conditions. You don't actually own the rights to the software.

While I don't agree with the OP's reasons for "avoiding" a free upgrade, they do have a right to insist the thread stay on topic. Nothin wrong with that. But, when you make controversial statements, people are going to focus on that, rather than the issue at hand.

Plug in Ethernet cable
Click next and unplug cable
after a short "Checking for updates"
"Who's going to use this device" (Local account setup)

I would think this would work for WiFi, if you can disconnect after clicking next.
Have not tried it

You may have missed the train of thought. 22000.194 is the version of 11 they were at before restoring back to Win10.

Something has changed - no need to disconnect from internet. Just enter a false email address, false password, it replies "oops, something has gone wrong".

Then click next and the next screen jumps to a local account input screen.

Sorry. I misunderstood. I thought it was clear in Bree's post that he had rolled back to Win10 and found that Win10 had updated to 22000.194, and that just blew me away.

:D no - I meant that my W11 test had updated to the current 22000.194 by the time I got round to restoring the W10 image.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FOUR was a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (1st gen) type 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device. This has now been sold and replaced by System Eight.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

No matter how you parse it, what you bought is a license, not the software out right. While you may have physical possession of the software, you do not own the software from the standpoint that you can't resell the OS, modify and distribute as your own. So, in that vain pparks1 is correct in what he said. You may not like it, but the fact is... you DO NOT own the software, you're "licensed" to use it.

2. Installation and Use Rights.

a. License. The software is licensed, not sold. Under this agreement, we grant you the right to install and run one instance of the software on your device (the licensed device), for use by one person at a time, so long as you comply with all the terms of this agreement. Updating or upgrading from non-genuine software with software from Microsoft or authorized sources does not make your original version or the updated/upgraded version genuine, and in that situation, you do not have a license to use the software.
