Samsung Magician doesnt recognize new 990 Pro

I was able to format it in Disk Managment but no matter what I did Magician wouldnt recognize the 990 Pro. Really unusual since it recognizes two other WD drives. This is in an NVME enclosure and I was attemnpting to clone it. I'd like to use Magician,. Reflect did the clone just fine. Samsung tech support couldnt really offfer any advice other than to use Reflect which did the clone. Any thoughts ?

I've never used a Samsung drive but seems you are not alone. Did you install the Samsung driver? Do you have latest bios installed? Latest version of Samsung Magician?

Samsung Magician most definitely recognizes the Samsung 990 Pro. I know this because I have 4 in my system. And there are no Samsung NVME 990 pro drivers. Just installing the drive is all that's needed.



Perhaps the drive is a fake?

Consider another possibility:

I have found for many different SSDs that the manufacturer software may not recognize the card in an external enclosure. This is because you are going through an intermediate interface (USB) before the enclosure converts it to PCIe..

Here is what I do: I will plug my NVMe drives into an internal slot and note the FW version, then I'll do a quick check an update and write down my current FW level. Now I can just monitor the web site every few months for an update. Also, if you need to update the FW, you may sometimes find that the update won't work in an external enclosure.

NOTE: My only Samsung NVMe drives were from years ago, so I don't know for sure that current Samsungs behave this way, I'm making generalizations based upon NVMe drives that I have used.

I decided to proceed with the clone using Reflect and install the drive and now Magician sees it. Runs great but I encountered another issue I cant figure out. I had a D drive and I created Drive E on the Samsung and moved my files from a SATA SSD to E. I removed the SATA drive and renamed E to D and now I'm showing drive E as a system drive. Cant figure this one out. Runs great with no issues but from a housekeeping standpoint its driving me crazy.
