Samsung magician Firmware Update stuck after 2.5 hours.


I do not allow my BIOS to do that.

The standard Windows NVMe driver is the same one used for all NVMe drives. Samsung offered an alternative driver back with the 900 series drives but have since quit offering one.

    I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.
Well, it turns out I missed a step in the removal of the VMD storage controllers in the Device Manager BEFORE disabling the VMD controller in the BIOS. I apparently put Descartes before d'Ors.

This time I first removed the VMD controllers (all instances), rebooted into Safe Mode to confirm, and THEN went into the BIOS to disable the VMD controller. All is well now and there are no compatibility warnings in Magician and the PC boots just fine.

Intel VMD enables enhanced management of NVMe SSDs, particularly for RAID configurations, Intel Optane Memory volumes, and to provide enterprise-level Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS) features for storage.   • Custom OS Installation: If you're installing a custom operating system that lacks the necessary Intel RST drivers for VMD, you may need to disable it in your BIOS/UEFI settings to ensure the operating system can see the NVMe SSDs.

How VMD affects NVMe SSDs:​

  • Invisibility to OS: With VMD enabled, the operating system's enumeration of devices stops at the VMD controller, making the individual NVMe SSDs invisible to the OS. Instead, the VMD driver from Intel manages access to the NVMe SSDs. That is, for any NVMe SSDs that VMD have been configured to do so, as different motherboards give different possibilities and have different options available in their UEFI settings when VMD is enabled. One example of such an option is passthrough mode, which makes the NVMe SSDs visible to the OS even with VMD enabled. AFAIK in passthrough mode you can't set up a RAID with Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST), though, BUT... among various other things, VMD's hot-plug capability still works if VMD is set to passthrough mode (and VMD is enabled).
  • Requires Drivers: For the OS to work with VMD-managed storage, the correct Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver must be installed.

When I did the firmware update it stalled for about 20 minutes. I called Samsung and while I had them on the phone I rebooted and it had updated without any sort of positive notification.

Let's say I wanted to revert to the last published, downloadable firmware... (the 6B2QJXD7 version was pulled for a reason apparently). Can that be done?

I just re-verified that I can still download the file with Firefox portable 142.0.1 with uBlock Origin. (Running in a default sandbox under Sandboxie-Plus 1.16.2 / 5.71.2 on Windows 11 Home 24H2 build 26100.4946.)

I found another link. Server n° 2 works for me, and the file hash codes of the downloaded file also match those of the file that I re-downloaded from the link I pointed to in my earlier post above (post #35).

@hdmi, thank you. I was able to download it from the French site. I want to have it available as I'm planning on picking up another 990 Pro soon.
I'd like to go with the 9100 Pro but they're almost $150 more.
