Samsung Magician vs Macrium Reflect for cloning new SSD drive?

I am getting a new Lenovo X1 gen 14 laptop in the next few days. I ordered it with the 512M SSD drive. I needed 2 Tb, but that's not available from Lenovo.

I am also getting a Samsung 990 Pro , 2 Tb drive in the next few days. It comes with Samsung Magician software. My plan was to use Macrium Reflect to clone the new drive from the one coming with the Gen 14. Then I'll swap in the new drive. I'm a little worried because the last time I did ,this four years ago, the new drive didn't boot. I forgot what I did to get it to boot.

Now I see that the Samsung comes with its own software. Any suggestions about using Samsung Magician vs Macrium Reflect?

Yep - try one.

If it works fine, great.

If not try the other one.

I used Macrium a few months ago and it worked perfect...

Try them both. Use Samsung Magician for the initial clone and then, going forwards, use Macrium for your backups.

I use Samsung Magician to clone, since I have all Samsung drives. I use Macrium for backups because it talks to my NAS without too much drama.

I have had two instances when Macrium reported a corrupted image after a restore was initiated, and this after files had been verified.
I made the error of exiting and rebooting Macrium PE and was left with an unbootable device.
It was not a big issue as I had a bootable rescue.

So my question, does a clone include all that's required to boot up instead of having to get the bootable media in case of such failure?
I couldn't use Magician anyway as my hardware is not Samsung.

With Samsung Magician, that should all be included. Anything that boots up the old drive will be cloned to the new one.

It's so easy to use my grandmother could do it. The hardest part is taking the machine apart and physically putting the new drive in there after you've cloned it. But I've always had successful boot ups after doing it. Smooth operation.

Yeah, at least one of the drives involved has to be a Samsung. What kind are you using?

The cloning operation on Samsung Magician works flawlessly. I have never had a non bootable device afterward. I have never had to restore a Macrium image, and I hope I never have to, but it seems to be easy enought to do. Even I can't screw it up. (Or can I?)

Kingston, Toshiba, Realtek and others . I think for a total of 8 but no Samsung, not by choice, just the way it ended up.

I've cloned 5 different PC's with Samsung Magician.... Since your going from a small 512mb to a large 2 tb you will need to resize your partitions (after you have cloned) inorder to take advantage of your new drive. I have used Minitool Partition Wizard for years to do all of my disk management.

Yeah for that you'll have to rely on something like Macrium.

I've used Ease US Partition Master for creating and resizing partitions. However, on a new drive with mostly free space, Windows can do this when I break the single partition into two partitions. That's probably what I'll do.

Samsung Magician worked flawlessly. I cloned the internal 512 MB SSD drive of my Lenovo X1 Gen 14 to the external 2 TB Samsung SSD drive. Swapped the latter into my new Lenovo (very easy with the new style of case) and everything booted up as it should.

Used Windows 11 disk manager to create two partitions, 800 GB and 1.1TB. I think the 100 GB shortfall must have fallen of my desk into recycling.

(That's a joke.)

I did learn something unexpected when I tried an iPhone backup later. My 800 GB partition was already almost full. It turns out that I had iTunes backups from 5 different phones piled up. I don't even have three of those old phones. That was an easy fix.

Acronis bootable USB image has never failed me. Have been using and restoring for years.

Never used Samsung Magician in my life. Macrium Reflect has never let me down when cloning, provided source drive is ok i.e. not suffering read/write issues.
