Saving Location Of Desktop Icons

I've used freeware DesktopRestoreInstall.exe since Win3.1, NT, Win2k, XP, Win7, Win11.

Installs in the shell context and I just resave after each time I've mucked around with the desktop icons.

Allan, may I ask you if you know if there is a limitation to the number of icons Iconoid can keep track of? I got a message, when saving another icon to my desktop, that said something along the lines of You moved 64 icons and Iconoid can only move 40 or 46 icons, not sure what the exact number was, but it was 40 something. I do have 64 icons so far and probably will end up with more over time and was curious about the message I got. For the record, I did not move 64 icons, I just added 1 icon to, apparently, the existing 63. I hadn't counted the icons until I got that message and it turns out I do now have 64 of them.

Hi HDL

I use Desktop Restore: http://www.midiox.com/zip/DesktopRestoreInstall.exe. It has a small footprint and does just what I need, restore my desktop. It is integrated into the desktop context menu. Simple to use.

Kind regards,

tecknot
Thank you and sorry I hadn't seen this before.

I tried following your link and it was totally blocked by my Windows Defender or Malawarebytes antivirus programs. I did play around and finally got to it at this link http://www.midiox.com/index.htm?http://www.midiox.com/desktoprestore.htm. Are you using it on Windows 11? What I saw ended at Windows 10.

Hi HDL,

No actually I only use it in Windows 10, but it should work in Windows 11.

I don't know. I only have a dozen or so icons on my desktop. Not sure why you would need 60

LOL, that's very few for me. My other machines have around 130 to 140 icons on them. I run everything from my desktop icons. never have used the start menu for that. This machine I'm using now has 136. See attachment and look inside the red box. This is why I need a program that keeps track on the icons and their location. Desktop1.jpg

If this was Windows 10, I'd suggest using Taskbar Toolbars to get all your shortcuts off the Desktop & to get them well organised.
Taskbar Toolbars - Creating and naming, customising, moving [post #20] - TenForumsTutorials

Since this is Windows 11, I have to suggest first using one of these utilities in order to enable the Taskbar Toolbar capability.
ExplorerPatcher - I've tried both but prefer this one since it is less disruptive to the system
StartAllBack

I never use the Start menu either. I use my shortcuts. But mine are organised.

All the best,
Denis
