Installation and Upgrade See if PC meets Requirements for Windows 11 with PC Health Check app

Check_for_Windows_11_compatibility-min.png

Windows 11 has all the power and security of Windows 10 with a redesigned and refreshed look. It also comes with new tools, sounds, and apps. Every detail has been considered. All of it comes together to bring you a refreshing experience on your PC.

If your existing Windows 10 PC is running the most current version of Windows 10 and meets the minimum hardware specifications it will be able to upgrade to Windows 11. The upgrade rollout plan is still being finalized, but for most devices already in use today, Microsoft expects it to be ready sometime in early 2022. Not all Windows 10 PCs that are eligible to upgrade to Windows 11 will be offered to upgrade at the same time. Windows Update will provide an indication if and when your PC is eligible. Once the upgrade rollout has started, you can check if it is ready for your device by going to Settings/Windows Update.

Windows 11 minimum system requirements:
  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC)
  • RAM: 4 gigabyte (GB)
  • Storage: 64 GB or larger storage device
  • System firmware: UEFI, Secure Boot capable
  • TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0 (Must be enabled in UEFI)
  • Graphics card: Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver
  • Display: High definition (720p) display that is greater than 9” diagonally, 8 bits per color channel
Windows 11 isn’t here yet, but will be coming later this year. You can check your PC for Windows 11 compatibility in the meantime to get ready.

Use the PC Health Check app to see if your current PC meets the requirements to run Windows 11. If so, you can get a free upgrade via Windows Update when it rolls out.

This tutorial will show you how to use the PC Health Check app to see if your current PC meets the requirements to run Windows 11.

Here's How:

1 Download the PC Health Check app from Microsoft.

2 Save the WindowsPCHealthCheckSetup.msi file to your desktop.

3 Run the WindowsPCHealthCheckSetup.msi file to install the PC Health Check app.

4 Check the I accept the terms in the License Agreement, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

PCHealthCheck-1-min.png

5 When finished installing, check Open Windows PC Health Check, and click/tap on Finish. (see screenshot below)

After you have installed the PC Health Check app, you can open it anytime from your Start menu.

6 You will now see your PC health at a glance. Click/tap on the Check now button when ready to see if your PC meets the system requirements for Windows 11. (see screenshot below)

PCHealthCheck-3-min.png

7 You will now see it you PC can run Windows 11 or not. Click/tap on the See all results button for more details on your results. (see screenshots below)

If the PC Health Check app is a sign of the care they are putting into Win11, make sure you all keep a system image of Win10 at the ready
1st version was crap, then the updater for it, and even installing the new version over the old, would crash and not complete, then you need to uninstall, and run Ccleaners reg cleanup. Then when you finally get the new version, it still shows incorrect data, like Windows 10 version from 2009(n)

Do you guys leave the PC Health Check application installed after use?
Does it have any ongoing usefulness?

I created a restore point before installing it, and then restored back after.

WhyNotWin11 has reported my CPU as not currently listed as compatible. My CPU is Intel Core i5 7400 @ 3.00GHz. Does this mean that unless I upgrade my processor or buy a more current computer, that I'm SOL on hopes of getting Win 11?

To be clear, it looks like I don't have the requirement (only the CPU) - is that the final word on it?

The thing about CPUs not being compatible even though they have TPU 2.0 and other things passing the test it, older CPUs(older that 8th gen) might not have the instruction set capabilities, or just haven't been tested yet by Microsoft.

Your CPU is NOT on the supported list. However, you can still run Win 11.
Lots of folks with 7000 series Intel CPUs are running it right now. :)

The easiest way to experiment... is make a full OS image backup of your Win 10? install, then just do an In-Place upgrade to Windows 11.

You can also use "WinPass11"

Depends on what YOU consider Prime Time.
For the things I do, it's fine. But I don't DO very much. :)

Spend some time just reading the posts on ElevenForum. It will give you an idea about where Win 11 still falls a bit short,
and where it's up to the job.
Keep in mind that Win 10 is supported till 2025, and Win 11 isn't really released until the end of 2021 or the start of 2022.

My computer is 100% compatible, but I still did an In-Place upgrade. All my programs came along, no problem, and I run some old ones.

Good to know, thank you. I'm more concerned about being able to upgrade for free if I wait until the end of 2021. I'd rather stay with Win 10 Pro and let all the detritus shake out before I upgraded. But if I wait and then have to pay, I'd risk upgrading now to take advantage of it.

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

Your i5-7400 is an Intel 7th gen processor. Microsoft's published specs require an 8th gen or later processor.

Whether MS may lower those requirement on the release of Windows 11 is a matter of some debate on the web, my feeling is that they will stick with their current requirements. We won't know for sure until Windows 11 gets its public release.

What this means for you is that although your PC meets all other requirements, its 7th gen processor means that your Windows 10 will not be offered Windows 11 as an upgrade option through Windows Update, and that the (yet to be released) Media Creation Tool for Windows 11 will not allow you to install or upgrade to 11 on your machine.

Now there are various tricks and workarounds to get 11 to install on an unsupported machine, and indeed many of us are running the Insider Dev version of 11 on older unsupported PCs. While that may be all right for testing, it's not a long term solution. For a stable machine that will continue to be supported through Windows Update you really need one that meets all the requirements.

If you can upgrade your PC's processor to a supported one, while keeping your Windows 10 activation, then come the release of Windows 11 it should be offered as a free upgrade.

Silky: Will Win 11 still be free, if I wait"?

Magic Eight Ball: All indications point to YES.

Microsoft wants to be able to say... Over 1 billion PCs (devices) are running Windows 11.
So it looks to go just like Windows 10, and for the same reason.
As long as you have a valid Win 10 key.... It's gonna be free.

Actually.... you could even legally get Windows 11 with a Win 7 or Win 8/8.1 key.
Do a clean install of Win 10 using a valid, Win7/8/8.1 key, activate it, then upgrade THAT Windows 10 to Windows 11.
