Seeking a second opinion... Is OneDrive malicious malpractice ?

That is one reason to free up space.. but also if you happen to delete a file by mistake.
If you delete it by mistake, it's available in the cloud recycle bin for 30 days.

The "ONLY" issue I have ever had with OneDrive wiping out data that was unexpected to me was upon restoring a Macrium image of my hard drive.

Imaging that on Feb 1st you create an image of your C drive and that contains your OneDrive folder. In Feb, Mar and April you create a whole bunch of files in OneDrive, they sync up to the cloud and are on your local hard drive. On May 1st, you resort to restoring that image from Feb 1st. Well, when the OneDrive client fires up, it will report that a whole bunch of files are now no longer on your local hard drive, which to onedrive means you deleted them locally and it will in turn delete them in the cloud. Again, all is not lost as they are in the cloud recycle bin and you can bring them back.

For this reason though, I keep my OneDrive folder on a hard drive that I do NOT image with imaging software. This way I can restore an image of my C drive...and still have my OneDrive on it's separate drive that is safe and sound. And honestly no reason I want to really "Backup" the oneDrive folder to my image because it IS already in the cloud as well...so I have another copy other than my local computer.

Aside from that, OneDrive for me has been absolutely great.

To an extent it is. If you have your file stored in OneDrive, and your physical hard drive dies on my local computer, you have a copy safe in the cloud. Also, if you have the file in OneDrive and you make a change and save it. Then later make another change and save it. And then decide, I really wish I wouldn't have saved those changes, you have revision history and can go back to that file at a previous point in time.

That's actually not the way it works. I

f you let your subscription lapse, you get 30 days in full read/write mode and don't lose any of your files. You can even create new files.

For the next 90 days, your data goes into a read-only format. You can view and download any files you want during this period, but you cannot edit files, nor can you create new files. If you have more than 5GB of files (the free space limit), syncing stops.

If after 6 months you haven't removed your data, Microsoft will permanently delete the excess over 5GB (Free account limit). Since that data is no longer being synced, it will remain on your machine.

The best plan is that when you decide to not renew, is to unlink your local computer as quickly as possible thus not giving onedrive any chance of touching anything.
That's good.

How long time do you have if you by accident do a shift-delete on the wrong file on the computer and you want to get to one stored in the cloud?
and the other way around.. you delete one file in the cloud.. how long time do you have to upload that file again from the computer, before the file on the computer get deleted?

How long time do you have if you by accident do a shift-delete on the wrong file on the computer and you want to get to one stored in the cloud?
When you shift delete it locally, it will sync immediately to the cloud and will disappear there. But you can log onto the web version of OneDrive and have 30 days to pull it back from the cloud recycle bin. That will put it back on OneDrive in the cloud and then sync it right back to your computer.

Demonstration. Here is a file in my D:\OneDrive\ElevenForums folder called criticaldata.txt.

1786060328671.webp

Now, I check in the cloud, and it's there
1786060474108.webp

Now, I shift delete it from my local hard drive.

1786060503874.webp

Checking on onedrive in the cloud and indeed it's gone.

1786060557829.webp

Looking at recycle bin in the cloud, here is my file that I shift-deleted on.

1786060654262.webp

I check the box and click on Restore via OneDrive in the cloud.
1786060699840.webp

The file is back in my ElevenForums folder in the Cloud.
1786060742443.webp

And it's on my local hard drive too. Albeit just a short link, which will download when I try to open it.

1786060796226.webp

Nothing was lost. Easy peasy to recover.

Negative on that. My files are accessible to my on my laptop, my desktop, my work computer via the browser, my cell phone, my Ipad, and my Mac Mini and my Macbook Air. as long as I can access the internet, I can get to my data. And if I lose my computer, or it just crashes, I know that even if I didn't bother to take any backups, that data is at least still in the cloud and I can get it right back.

Can you set OneDrive to only do oneway sync?
so if you delete something in onedrive(in the cloud) it wont get deleted on the computer?
I set my file attributes to "Available when online," so that they do not take up any physical space on my PC. You can still see the OneDrive file/folder structure, but the files will not take up any space on your PC.

If I use a Microsoft web app to edit a OneDrive file, since the file does not physically exist on my PC, there will be no syncing from OneDrive to my PC. Note that this is separate from deleting, renaming, reorganizing folders, etc. because, again, your PC will show you the accurate OneDrive file/folder structure.

The second I use a local app to edit a OneDrive file, it immediately gets downloaded, set to "Available on this device," and syncing is enabled.

When you shift delete it locally, it will sync immediately to the cloud and will disappear there. But you can log onto the web version of OneDrive and have 30 days to pull it back from the cloud recycle bin. That will put it back on OneDrive in the cloud and then sync it right back to your computer.
With the ISP service I have, it includes a Microsoft 365 Enterprise license; so, I use OneDrive Business instead of OneDrive Personal.

For OneDrive Business, believe it or not, there's an additional recycle bin, called the "Second-stage recycle bin:"

I made use of it once and it obviously was a life-saver! 😊

By the way, the retention period bumps up to 93 days.

Sure makes you wanna go back to MS DOS, no recycle bin, Cloud, CoPilot, AI, man those where the day's when we wrote our own programs in Quick Basic etc. :giggle:
I was there in the beginning. There's absolutely no way I would want to go back to anything that primitive.

The OneDrive folder on both my PCs is permanently set to "Always keep on this device". This way all my data and photos are kept updated locally in real-time on both computers. My data is, of course, synced offsite in cloud OneDrive. My data is backed up daily with Macrium Reflect X full drive image backups with the last 30-days of images always saved. My backups are complete with one copy of my data always kept offsite to satisfy the 3-2-1 Backup Strategy.

I have everything from zero backup..... up to "tinfoil hat worldwide NEMP proof" backup strategy.😅

Zero backup...... Movies/series that exists online and is just wayyyyy to many TB of data to have backed up.
Nice to have...... Two copies (on-prim, online) of things like.. wallpaper, hard to get movies/series, manuals to my things. and system disk images to my computers so i don't have to reinstall my OS's.. temporary text documents etc.
Nice to keep...... Three copies (on-prim, online+offline) things i can get hold of again "with some hard work" or can create again.
Must keep.......... Four copies (on-prim, online+offline and offsite) things that i really want to keep if my house burns down.
Doomsday keep..Five copies (on-prim, online+offline and offsite and also on DVD) in case a EMP kills all storage electronics and all data centers. things i cant be without and can never-ever be restored or recreated etc. like legal documents/contracts... photos of family/friends that isn't alive anymore... and things on that level.
