select specific updates only (ala Win 7)

No luck finding even finding Sledgehammer 2.7.3 rc1a. 2.7.3 rc1 to even try out. I've been using Sledgehammer script with Win 10 but no luck trying latest 2.72 on 11 no matter how many permissions I grant or try running as administrator. Flashes onfor a split second then disappers
Anyone found an alternative so Windows doesn't fubar my laptop with not ready for prime time updates or older drivers than ones installed? Best workaround I've found so far is WUD (Windows Update Disabler) along with older version of WUMT (Windows Update Mini Tool).

I use WAU Manager to take over from Windows Update. It’s lightweight unobtrusive and simple to use.
The latest version is 3.8.4.0 so my old screenshots below are out of date. It may be worth looking at?

After checking the small box at the top to allow WAU Manager to take over, checking the “Normal” option below it, you can click “Update Windows Now” and it will show you the available updates before proceeding. You can chose not to proceed or select updates to install.
It can also uninstall updates and check for installed software updates.
You can allow security updates to install regardless of the settings, but I have never tried it. It's on the first screen "Also update Windows Defender"

Looks like a useful program. The later version seems to have an additional control labeled "Deactivate the windows update service". Do you also check that box?

And are there any downside to using WAU manager?

I have not tried the deactivate. No disadvantages that I know of.
If I remember correctly, dacrone also knows of a similar one.

I used under Win 10 and win 11

Download Sledgehammer 2.7.2 - MajorGeeks

Sledgehammer (formerly WUMT Wrapper Script) is used to launch Windows Update MiniTool and disable Windows Updates until you run it again avoiding unwanted reboots.

I’m going to try that app because for some reason WAU Manager didn’t detect the last preview update where as Windows Update did.

I decided to uninstall WAU manager. But there seems to be no way!

It doesn't show up in settings, or anywhere else that I can find. Yet it is on the system somewhere. It must be, because it can run on it's schedule, and it can block windows update.

Is it a malware of some sort?

Yeah it’s malware, I always push malware here, it’s why I am still a member.

In fact it’s so malicious, that Brink still has it in a Tutorial on the Ten Forums.

WAU Manager is portable. It operates from the folder you run it from. Or should I say, WAUManager.v.3.8.4.0.exe is the program.

Uncheck either option at the top of the app depending on which option you asked WAU to use

Click Save and Apply
Delete WAUManager.v.3.8.4.0.exe (or whatever version you have)
Done.

If you disable windows updates with WAUmngr can you re-enable it by unchecking the box? How otherwise?

Yes for the first box, no idea for the second. I assume if you unceck the 2nd box and click save an apply, it will revert back. Then just delete the executable if you don’t want to use it.

I think you’ll find that if you’ve checked the first box, you can still use Windows Update via the normal “Check for updates” in Windows Update.
As for the box that says, deactivate the update service, like I mentioned, I have never tried it.

I didn’t make the app., I just use it, without issue or fear of what it may damage, which I’d guess is nothing. Has anyone thought of reading the app documentation?

If you don’t want to use either portable app, just manage them via powershell. No programs are necessary

I did like the program's user interface, but I don't know what it does other than use the regular windows update functions.
