I've been a computer user, coder, and administrator since 1984. Things that have been habits to me for years are arcane wonders to neophytes. I used to have this huge table of ALT codes memorized, but Windows 11 doesn't recognize them, displaying this stupid black diamond with a question mark in it for such generated characters. � See? That was ALT+130, supposed to yield é. Anyway, this isn't about that; this is about keyboard shortcuts I've used LONG before browsers generated pop-up menus when I selected text in them.

I ignore those menus (see attached image) in browsers; they don't work. I select, CTL+C, and paste it where I want. Been doing that since the eighties. This "innovation" as seen in the screen capture is complete garbage. It never pastes what I want when choosing the pop-up menu option Copy. That menu is a damned nuisance, frankly.

By the way, I keep a plain text file of international and other characters that I need since ALT codes stopped working; that's how I was able to generate the é character. Copy/Paste Control Commands.

I don't have much call for international characters, but the degree symbol I do use a lot (Alt 0176, by the way) but I can never remember the code when I need it. I keep it pinned at the top of my clipboard history (Win+V) for ease of pasting whenever I need it in a post.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
If the tutorial doesn’t help check your preferred keyboard Language/Layout

Select the Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region.

If “English (United States)” isn’t at the top, try moving it there and check the ALT function. Make sure your Num Lock key is “ON”
If English (United States) is selected at the top, try moving a different layout to the top (preferred)

If you’ve been a computer user, coder, and administrator since 1984, you should know that needing to adapt to change is inevitable and a learning curve like anything else. Much has changed since 1984 so you should be used to adapting.

One more thing; I am trying to replicate your screenshot. No matter where on this forum (or any other place in Windows) I do not see what you see, I have no "Search Copy Snapshot" hover menu. . Perhaps I have something deactivated in Windows that prevents this, I do not know but I have looked. There is nothing obvious.

When I tried Edge on this forum, I get a different menu. Perhaps I have an up to date Edge or you use a different browser. Perhaps there are similar settings in your browser.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
