Forum,

I am interested in customising the context menu.

I find that I use send-to-desktop often, and it is this choice that I have to use "show more options" for.

On the forum people have asked similar to no avail. If there are answers I would like to know.

I read elsewhere there was a registry hack that I didn't get. Am wondering of anyone has tried similar?

Hello BillZ, :)

You can use the method in the tutorial below to restore the old context menu to no longer have to click on "Show more options" first.

@BillZ,

Hi, and welcome to 11Forum. If one of the above solutions gave you your desired result, you would be keeping up a tradition in these forums by clicking the Like button in the post that worked for you. You can choose from Like (a way of just saying Thank You), Helpful (= ~This solution solved my problem in a way I understand), and Great Support (This solution solved my problem, I understand it, and it will probably be helpful to lots of other users, as well).

All three of those choices are ways to say a simple "Thank You" to volunteers who offer to help you here.

Apologies, my OP was not clear enough. I like the shortened context menu but I would like to add "send to" to the options rather than having it in the "more options". I do not want the windows 10 context menu - it is too long. I would like to remove some of the context menu items as well but more importantly add "send to" as a choice.

Okay, let's talk. I'd like to see a screenshot of the Windows 10 context menu you find "too long."

In these shots, you'll see that I have Scan with entries for both my active anti-malware progs, and you'll see that I have removed some things I never use, such as Share, Give access to, Restore previous versions, and Include in library. I may have removed other things I've forgotten about. And I've added Take Ownership.

If you remove the anti-malware scanners and the things I have already removed, the Windows 10-type context menu isn't too long at all. Maybe if you let us help you shorten yours, you'll find that the single Windows 10-style menu with Send to ... in its list suits you.

Thanks very much, that is a good workaround.

Please find attached the scan and as you can see the menu is very long - I have to expand this menu to reach the menu items I actually use such as send to and rename.

On the top menu I can only recall using regularly

Unlockme

and

open
Play with vlc
Add to archive
scan selected items for virus

On the bottom menu are the commands I use the most but rarely use

cut
copy

as I use shortcuts.

I'm surprised that you've let your context menu turn into what I see as a kind of dump. I count sixteen commands I would eliminate immediately, but that's just my humble opinion.

My conclusion is that you really don't have a problem with the one-panel context menu; you have a problem with allowing a large assortment of (infrequently used?) lines to occupy your context menu, instead of occupying your Start menu, your Apps list, and your Taskbar. Organizing things on a personal computer is always a highly personal matter, and no on gets to prescribe any "right" way, to do things. I just think that your original post points to the wrong problem: you can't find a way to add an item to the short context menu, and to date, I haven't seen one either. But if you weeded that miles-long context menu of your attachments, Send To would be right there, front and center, and easy to access, on a single-panel context menu.

Peace, friend, and good luck.

Dan

Dan,

I agree with your assessment. Because of the clutter I don't use the context menu much. Because of the clutter I liked w11 short context menu. How can I delete items from the long context menu?

Hi, BillZ,

I'm really pleased you're on board with the idea of trimming that cumbersome context menu. It isn't a one-click process, but it's not too difficult, either, so let's take it a bit at a time.

First, there are downloadable one-click files in these tutorials. Just open the page and scroll down until you find Remove, and a Download link. (Once downloaded, right-click file and > Properties, and way down at the bottom, click Unblock, and then Apply. Then double-click the file and you're home free. These are all perfectly safe and effective (to borrow a phrase from the pandemic.) Seriously.

That'll get rid of five lines.

Now, open your registry editor and find

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\AddtoPlaylistVLC
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\PlayWithVLC

Each of those is a folder. Just right-click the folder and choose Delete. Yes to "folder and all its contents."

Two more lines.

Come back with a report or questions or both, and we'll carry on. We'll get that menu slim, svelte, and muscular yet.

I would get rid of a lot of those, they really don't seem that useful, WinRAR is editable in it's settings and there are many tweaks about from Brink's tutorials and @Wisewiz had done a great

Yes, it's more than OK.

When diagrams are posted this way, there are fewer barriers to somebody considering whether or not they have something useful to contribute.

Dan,

I have removed some further menu items, and this is my current menu:-

1635515645200.png

This is much better than it was - thank you.

I would like to delete the following items but don't know how:-

Pin to Quick Access

Super Antispyware

Combine files in Acrobat

Pin to start

ASUSwebstorage

Why do I want "Give access to"? Dan, I think I made a mistake with your tutorial by adding so I have removed it. It is now removed but I have not updated the screen capture.

Thanks again for all your help.

@BillZ

Great job! I would uninstall UnlockMe. It's an antique, and there are much newer and better file unlockers that don't sit on your context menu. That'll be another line gone.

I think that if you'll explore the settings available for Acrobat, SuperASW, and ASUS (I think you'd be well advised to dump as much of the junk that comes from a computer manufacturer as possible: look at you Apps and Features list/Programs list and see whether you have entries for ASUS. Image your C: drive with your backup program, and then take out all of the ASUS programs listed, reboot, and make sure there's nothing amiss. There shouldn't be. Those manufacturer utilities are usually useless in the best case scenario, and resources hogs in the worst.

Do some exploring in settings for those items, especially looking for entries like "Explorer integration."
