You connect the Ethernet from the primary router to one of the LAN ports on the router you're using as an AP, don't connect it to the WAN port. If the router has a specific option to configure as an AP (extender), then follow those directions.

I typically use the same SSID but a different channel. I also typically use channels 1,6, or 11 for the 2.4ghz band as those are non-interfering channels.

To summarise various posts.
Points 1,2 and 3 are mandatory.

1. Both routers need to be connected LAN port to LAN port. First router is your existing primary router connected to internet via its wan port.

2. Second router needs to be assigned a static ip address on same subnet as main router (you may need to login to second router first to change IP address)

3. DHCP on second router needs to be turned off.

Optional

4. Change wifi ssid and password on second router to be same as primary router. If you do this set its IPV4 channel to 1, 6 or 11 not auto. Also primary router channel should be set to 1,6 or 11 not auto. However channel number selected should be different for each router.

I am not sure about IPV6 channel router.

You do not need to set IP addresses the same but if you do, devices will (normally) connect to strongest signal.

5. Turn off port forwarding on second router.

Alternative option.

6. Connect primary router lan port to secondary router wan port.

IP addresses on secondary router need to be on separate subnet to primary router and DHCP needs to be switched on.

Wifi ssid and password need to be different.

This alternative option essentiallly means users attached to primary router cannot directly see secondary router using RDP for example.

So one might choose to allow guests to connect to primary router but not secondary router (as second router is behind a NAT firewall) giving a greater degree security to system host.

This option may need dreaded double port forwarding in some cases.

In general, the alternative option is more complicated but may be useful in networks that need some isolation of the routers.

If you have a router with the bridge mode option, which apparently he has, it's very simple to use that.

Glad it now works.

No idea about using phone. I do not know of any router that needs a phone to login.

Some of the Mesh networks require a phone to setup. Years ago when I bought the Google Mesh modules, the phone was the only way to configure them. It still is a "phone only" setup even today.
