OS
Windows 11 Canary Channel
When I installed the Win 11 Home Beta in VMware I didn't use the trick to install without a MS Account. Needless to say, my user's name is the first 5 digits of my email. I want to add another user with my name the delete the first user. When I try to sign-in to my MS Account with the second user Windows won't let me. I know I can have two users use the MS Account on the computer, I just don't remember how to do it.

Why don't you delete the 1st account and then login with the MS account on the new user?

You cannot have two accounts on the same computer that use the same Microsoft Account for logging into Windows with. The reason is at the login screen you enter your email address for login, how is Windows supposed to know which account you want?

There is a way to have two users on the same computer using the same MS Account. I just don't remember how to do it. I had it on this desktop but I deleted my Admin user while trying to test how I did it. My old desktop still has it setup that way. I have an Admin and a Standard User that sign-in to my MS Account.

I have been trying to remember how I setup my desktops to be able to be signed in to my MS Account with both users. The only thing I do know is that I did it while running Win 10 so maybe the option was removed in Win 11.

For safety reasons I usually run the computer as a Standard User. When I want to make any major changes, I'll sign in as the Admin. I have both of my desktop's setup so that both users sign-in with my MS Account. I deleted the Admin user on this desktop last night while trying to figure out how I did it. I just finished restoring a macrium image and my users are back to being signed into my MS account.

I used to use the same method in the past, Often having a selection of local users with different access rights in addition to my totally standard user and my full access admin,. these were used for network, backup and other sub systems management, but have found the token system and UAC to be as safe and more convenient especially if you set the slider in UAC at it's strictest setting

You need to switch the first account from an MS account to a local account, then you should be able to switch the new account from a local account to an MS account.

So you're saying both Accounts used the same credentials?
Yes! No matter what user I sign-in with it is signed in to my MS account with the same email address.

You need to switch the first account from an MS account to a local account, then you should be able to switch the new account from a local account to an MS account.
Looks like I might have to. When I was running Win 10, I was able to use two users with one MS Account.

I want to set one to be the Admin and the other as a Standard user.
I'm just wondering about the purpose of doing so. What is it that you want to achieve with this? I mean I can't see any benefit of having multiple users that use the same MS account. It will only add to the confusion.

Often, many of us (including myself), try to do things that have no clear end use or distinct benefits. It is okay to try things for educational/ experimental reasons, but more often than not, I find that our attempts to find a solution are for problems that don't actually exist. :)

I have been doing it for years and there has never been any confusion. Maybe it's an OCD thing but I want an Admin Account for when I want to make any changes and a User Account that doesn't have Admin rights. I know it can be setup like that in Win 10. I don't know if I did something different when I setup the two users in Win 10 or if the option has been removed in Win 11. I'm going to go ahead and admit defeat trying to set it up in Win 11. I'm going to make a new user with my name and change it to Admin then remove the original user. Another OCD moment, I don't want my user's name to be the first 5 characters of my email. It looks like I just randomly hit keys and yes, it bothers me.

If you want to log in with the same Microsoft account into two different accounts, then that I see that that can be a problem, but most importantly, why? What's the point of that? But then again, I don't get why would you want to sign in with the Microsoft account to begin with ...

Usually, this happens when you:

1) Have one account as a Microsoft account you sign in to Windows with.

2) Have a second account as a local account you sign in to Windows with, and use the same Microsoft account above to sign in to the Microsoft Store or added to "Accounts used by other apps".

Yes, I want both accounts to log in to my MS Account. I have been doing it for years and never not even once has it been a problem. When I start either one of my desktops I get the sign-in screen with two users. One is named Admin and the other has my name. No matter what user I choose when I get logged in, I'm signed in to my MS Account. As to Why, I have been doing it for years and see no reason to change except that I can't find a way to do it in Win 11.

The next time I run the VM I'm going to create the account with my name and make it an Admin account. After I know it's running Ok, I'm going to delete the first user. I come to the conclusion that whatever I did in Win 10 must not work in Win 11.
