If that was true, why do so many of us have no problems like this and why does it happen only on some machines. No, the problem is not Windows, it is the cr*p way that some vendors implement Modern Standby.

True, but only if you have a machine that has these issues. I have a Lenovo and a Chuwi (cheap Chinese laptop) that both have Modern Standby and NEVER have any issues related to it. I never shutdown either machine. I just close the lid and stuff it into the backpack. Neither laptop has ever woken up while the lid is closed, but that is because the manner in which both Lenovo and Chuwi implement Modern Standby will simply not allow it to wake while the lid is closed.

A simple test for this: Use the Alarm app built into Windows. Set an alarm. If you see a message that says that the alarm will sound only when the PC is one, then your system likely does not support Modern Standby. If the Alarm does not play at the time you set, then your laptop does not allow itself to be woken by an app during Modern Standby.

At least for my usage case, this is the best possible configuration. I have the instant wake that Modern Standby provides, but they simply will not wake when the lid is closed.

Before you close the lid, disconnect AC. That goes into network disconnected standby, so nothing happens in your bag.

I only had a problem with S0 modern standby one time on my 18" laptop and that was probably my fault or possibly NVIDIA or a combination of both. After installing the latest NVIDIA GPU driver for the RTX 5080 my screen wouldn't wake from sleep and then the machine would BSOD and reboot. Once I switched back to the Dell factory NVIDIA drivers and stuck with those drivers sleep has been flawless. On my little Surface laptop I do always shut it down first if I'm throwing it in the laptop bag and taken it from the house. That's just me feeling more comfortable with it shutdown for transport though.

Ah yes, you bring up a good point. Laptops seem to be particularly picky about the display drivers where the manufacturer often has customized them. I have an ASUS laptop that simply will not come out of sleep if I use a generic Intel driver, but all is fine using their display driver AND disabling Fast Startup in Windows.

I also have an HP laptop that works fine using generic Intel display drivers, but I do still have to disable fast startup or that machine will lock up if I boot after a shutdown, but a reboot is fine.

Ain't gonna happen. Modern Standby is here to stay. I believe a lot of the problems folks have with it are due to whatever hardware it's running on.
Like everything else, it's the hardware that has to adapt to Windows, not the other way around. When one thinks about all the different hardware and so many brands it's mind boggling.

Something else, a system's UEFI bios determines its handling of power. Some OEMs are better at updating their bios than others. Then you have the human factor to consider. Users will overclock, or set their power options to its ultimate power power plan. So, while I think modern standby is the one of the worst things to come down the pike, it's something people are going to have to live with.

It's been the general consensus here to use hibernate rather than modern standby. Not the greatest solution, but about the only one a modern standby user has.....or as @TraderGary said, shut it down.

The only thing that I do that ramps up the fan and heats this machine up is compressing files with 7zip. Cutting back the number of threads in 7zip slows it down and cools it off.
