Shall I delete my Yahoo account?

The choice is up to you. If you decide to keep it, you could use it as a junk mail account. Use it anytime you have to use an email address and you think they might use it to send you a lot of junk mail. This would help minimize the amount of junk mail to your main email account.

I'm still using AOL mail after many years. It's full of non important mail and keep it for nostalgic reasons.

I still have my AOL account, same name as my Yahoo and Gmail.

Broadening the topic somewhat but still the same issue of preventing misuse what do you people do with your (almost) dead email addresses elsewhere, your (almost) dead domain names, your (almost) dead websites? The latter 2 have to be paid for!

And what would you like your heirs do with them?

Do you still receive legitimate emails from senders that you want or just junk mail? If you're still getting legitimate emails, there should be a way to update your email info on these sites. If it's just junk, you can delete the email account. I would think there is a waiting period before they allow that email address to be reused.

Well, the waiting period for service providers is a couple of months or so, and here I am after a couple of years, and I am still not sure if that's enough to prevent misuse.

Even disposal of non-Internet assets (like a sale of a company that has your name attached to it) can cause problems if you are not careful. But you are at least protected from misuse by heavy regulation and having a good lawyer.

There is NO regulation in the disposal of Internet assets (no lawyer can help you) and service providers simply disclaim anything after a dismal waiting period :scream:

Edit: Even tossing things in the garbage can can cause problems if those things have your name attached to it. There is a reason why disposable email addresses (that I also use) have no identifying features. That's not what I am talking about in this thread. What I am talking about in this thread is Internet assets that have my (or your) name attached to it. You can't just toss those without taking precautions. Well, some people have no assets with their name attached to it, and wonder what the issue is all about...

That's exactly why I still keep my Yahoo account, for a junk mail account. I have a G-mail account I use for online shopping and certain websites plus my ISP email for personnel/important emails. I would say 98% of my spam goes to the yahoo account from miscellaneous stuff wanting an email address.

Yahoo still exists??? :what:
Yep and AOL mail now goes through Yahoo Servers when Verizon took over AOL and Yahoo and was now being sold to something called Apollo Global Management and is rebranded as Yahoo EMEA Limited which will continue to waste web space by running AOL and Yahoo sites.
I have a very old AOL account that I use as my Gmail recovery account, avoids having to mess with phones.

As far as I was aware, if you don't use a Yahoo account they close it eventually anyway, haven't used mine for years, came with an ISP many moons ago.

If you delete your Yahoo account, you will longer have any connection to that email address. Just remember to update your email address on any site you need to associate an email address with. If Yahoo was to reissue your old email to someone the account would be tied to them and not, you. If they decided to use the email address for something illegal the electronic trail would lead back to them or their VPN address.

I have deleted it long time ago, but first I redirected all Yahoo mails to Gmail, unsubscribed or re-subscribed in all media sources where previous mail was used and waited about a year (or maybe less, I don't remember exactly). After that, deleting that account was a routine operation without any regrets.

Maybe this metaphor helps 'if you abandon your car, it can get misused for a bank robbery' and even if you did not commit the bank robbery, you do not want that to happen in the first place.

Proper disposal is required, but what does 'proper disposal' mean on the Internet?

To me, merely deleting Internet accounts and email addresses (that have your name attached to it) without taking precautions is equivalent to abandoning your car.
----------------
Some people don't seem to know what a disposable email address is. It is something like name@gmail.com where 'name' is a random string of characters, like a computer-generated password.

I and billions of others regularly use disposable email addresses for one month or so to complete a transaction of some sort. You can then safely delete such disposable email addresses without any precautions because your name is not attached to it.

I have a couple of Yahoo Email accounts that I check once or twice a year. There is no harm in leaving your Yahoo account open, you may get locked out of your current Email account and need another Email account to recover your troubled Email account.

You can use the Filter Option How To Filter Emails In Yahoo: A Step-by-step Guide For 2022 in Yahoo mail to filter specific words to delete or send them to Spam automatically if you don't want to see them.
