I am going to share a large folder that has data from many different windows installs, this data was taken from 3 different windows installs and combined, this data was all in the users folders (pictures, documents, ect under the USERS folder and even some pictures that were saved in a PUBLIC folder. All these files have ntfs permissions attached that will interfere with SHARING this folder in a peer to peer network. My plan is to use the takeown command and then run icacls and also the streams command to clean data up in this folder.
I used robocopy and syncback so I would retain data stamps and meta data.
This peer to peer network - in the past I had success using the methode of creating the same user name and pass on each computer system on the peer to peer network. This peer to peer network setup is still supposed to work with windows 11 pro as far as I know. This is a fishing expedition here for information maybe someone has something to add about preparing data for a folder that I am going to share via windows peer to peer network. I will overview the tutorials on file sharing for windows 11 that brink has made, but still ... just running this by everyone.

After things are shared and that is established I am moving forward with installing microsoft 365 business addiction - onedrive will be disabled except for being located in its own folder on a internal drive it will server as a backup and a way to access data on the road, it will serve as a read only folder and will contain a WORKING folder for files that have been edited. I hope that I can only have one local account on each machine and no MS/LOCAL accounts tied together on any machines. If we use the ms account it will be through the browser only. MS office will open files and save files to this shared folder on the internal 2T data drive and one drive will not have direct access to this. Robocopy or syncbackfree will copy files over to the folder where onedrive is.

I write this to see if anyone has any advice here, I have done this with windows 10pro and windows 7 pro Now with here with windows 11 pro. Now with the latest version of office 365 business addition. It seams there is ALWAYS a Gotcha or things that can be done to make things go better. Cant hurt to ask for advice !

IF the permissions were retained from any user, let alone multiple users, then yes, I would expect the folder would be impossible to share(or even use by one user)without running into all kinds of problems.. Honestly, I had no idea that using apps like Robocopy or Syncbackfree retained the original permissions. Since you say they did, the only thing you can do is to attempt to change the permissions on the destination folders making sure to include file inheritance. Since you insinuate there are many files to deal with, I hope doing this proves to be 100% successful.

I do know that by default direct copying a file does not retain the original permissions. The copied file inherits the permissions of the destination folder
Since permissions are such a tricky thing, I don't mind admitting that dealing with them scares the bejesus out of me. Wwhat I do in cases where I want to absolutely guarantee there will be no permissions issues to bite me in the butt later is to use a live linux distro on usb drive(Mint and Ubuntu are my favorites) to copy files from one folder/drive to another. Linux does not care about permissions.

Good luck.
