First automatic translations such as systran were just translating word by word and it was not easy to understand, especially when expressions were involved. Google translate does a better job but not perfect. Probably with AI in a few years you can have a conversation. I would like a gadget like Star Trek Universal Translator that everyone would speak their own language and the others would understand like he spoke in their mother tongue. Probably we are not too far from that.

Speaking of automatic translation, I would like a utility that can read a MacOS or Linux application and automatically convert to Windows or vice versa. Imagine a similar utility in the 80's and 90's that would read a C64 or Amiga or Atari ST, or -younameit- game and convert to MS-DOS game with as close as possible graphics (VGA) and sound (AdLib or SoundBlaster). It would be great for all of us PC users that either some games weren't available on PC or they sucked (CGA/EGA graphics) compared to other ports. In fact I would bet Commodore had paid developers to make deliberately most games look uglier on PC in order to sell Amigas. Come on, VGA graphics, especially Mode X (320x240 256 colors) can beat Amiga anytime.

No sweat. Most applications have a Windows version or a much better alternative. Linux and MacOS users would want a utility to convert Windows applications and games for their system. Wine is a good substitute for such utility, but not the real thing.

The APIs are totally different among the three. You might be able to do something between Linux and macOS, but I doubt it. Even getting things packaged for different Linux desktop stinks, paraphrasing Linus.

When I worked for IBM in the late 60's, people kept telling me that in 10-15 years, programmers would be out of a job. Fast forward 50+ years, and programmers are still alive and well! We're probably a long ways from totally eliminating programmers, I question if I'll get to see it. :LOL:

Flatpak can install any available package on any Linux system as all Flatpak apps/programs are all self contained within the Flatpak.
many Linux distro's now have Flatpak enabled by default.

agreed not everyone likes flatpak just like many don't like snaps on Ubuntu for myself i prefer deb files as i use Debian systems.
flakpak is now available on every major Linux distro but again its a matter of choice for each individual to use it or not.
whether that will be the standard in the future is anyone's guess.

Similarly you can install or update applications in Windows using winget command or the UniGetGUI application, but for certain applications I have chosen to exclude them and do it manually. I don't trust automatic update for them. Especially when there is a x86 and x64 version and I want both. Winget or UniGetGUI will update only the x64 version.

This image reminded me of reading about a laser that projected a virtual keyboard on desk so you could have a full keyboard always with your laptop. Guess what? It wasn't so easy to use, so we haven't heard or read about it again.

Cool gadget, but I agree, it would be a royal PITA to use. I have trouble using any keyboard that doesn't have tactile feedback and some key travel.
