Hi,

When I click (or hover) the "show desktops" button in the taskbar, as you can see on the screenshot below, the icon of the PNG file type is displayed as a background. PNGs are associated with XnView, but I'm not sure it's related.

Any idea how I could fix this? I have not functionality issues however, it's just weird. I have this issue since as long as I can remember (the computer is about 6 months old IIRC), on Windows 11.

Thanks!

Haven't seen any issue on the "Peek" of Win11 which works differently from that in Win10. Hover only shows what clicking the icon does, Show desktop. Clicking it minimizes all open programs, click again restores them. The Peek on Win10 did fade the programs when hovering to actually just give the peek, click did minimize and restore. When seeing problems that seem weird for the version of Windows the question arises about whether third-party software has been installed that changes the default behaviors.

For what it's worth, I installed XnView in the Windows Sandbox and associated PNG files with it. The Task View button still works normally.

OP isn't talking about the Show Desktop thing at the right. They're talking about the Task View button next to the Start button, the one that shows a preview of your virtual desktops if you hover over it.

Welcome to the forum :-)

If you click on one of the desktop links, does it actually have the PNG icon as it's background image and not just the preview image?

First image is PNG second is JPG , associate with IrfanViewer, but I also have a plugin that enables the possibility of adding even PSD as background, Fast Picture Viewer Codec Pack
I don't know if the plugin makes a difference, try associating the png images with another application.

What is the png image you are trying to put in the background?

(Sorry for the late reply. I thought I'd receive emails with replies which wasn't the case)
Thanks for all the answers.
I'm indeed talking about the button next to the start button.
The background of my desktop was the default one with the computer. I changed it to one of the Recent images but the issue is still there.
An interesting fact is that I changed the app associated with the PNG to "Photos" and it know uses this new icon, as you can see below.

1703085640764.png
I also tried to put a custom PNG or even JPG as background. While it does indeed change the background, it does not fix my issue of having the icon of the app associated with PNG in the preview.
EDIT: If I put a solid color as desktop background, I don't have the issue, but if I revert back to an image, it comes back.

@fraxxx I'm curious what happens if you create another user account on the PC and log in with that. Does the issue affect that user as well?

I create a local account, and this new account didn't have the problem. At first, PNG were not associated with anything, when I associated with "Photos", it still worked, not problem in the desktops preview with this account.
