Solved Sick of my internet issues

8Mbps=1 MB/s =That's like run-of-the-mill ADSL2.
Your problems sound like what I randomly got, during my first year of having ADSL2, when I lived on Cavendish Gulf Rd. In fall, 2007, it randomly was abnormally slow. At that house at the time, it seemed that I was lucky to get 5 Mbps down. Maybe I just had to change the settings for the BEC 7402TM ADSL router, which I had at the time. If you have ADSL and if you think you may have the wiring fixed, then setting the coding gain to "7" can give a major boost. Even more so, if living downtown, when most likely next to the exchange.
Unlikely that the router will randomly reboot or otherwise randomly get disconnected, if near the exchange.
I think I had more random disconnections with Comcast cable in Bellows Falls, Vermont and VTel FTTH, especially in the early-FTTH-days than I did with ADSL2!
Most of that is fixed with VTel FTTH now. I suspected that it was the Actiontech V1000H router, which was the first router that I had with FTTH, from November 26, 2013 to April 15, 2016. Looks like the best experience so far with the Technicolor DWA1230 router.

their modem, your modem, the babysitters modem, or even the popes modem wont really matter. It's the signal stats that do. Some modems deal better with a lower margin than others.

please locate your modems signal status page and take a few screenshots. without that, we can all guess all day long.

I don't think so. Everything was perfectly fine and stable for the first year with our Asus router. I think its restricted bandwidth. Had this with the last ISP too - fine for the first 6 months then got dire. Switched. Fine for a year then got worse and worse. The day you phone to complain it gets better for a couple of days - then worse again.

No matter which ISP we go with it is all Openreach wiring - just different marketing packages/branding. It's out in the sticks and it's totally crap. Paying for superfast broadband just to get 5mbps. Standard broadband is 1mbps.

Anyway my Starlink package has arrived! That was really quick. On ordering it said - could be 2 to 4 weeks as very busy. It arrived in less than a week. Will be trying it out over the week-end. However there are probably extras to buy as no doubt the dish will need to go on the roof on a pole to get a good service. The dish arrives with a small stand and can just sit in your front garden - but that is hardly the best place to get an unobstructed view.

The extras are - a tall pole for the garden or various fixings so it goes on the roof. The idea is you test it out first and decide if the service is good enough before fitting to the roof or sending back. That can be tested by finding somewhere outside without an obstructed view.

I am trying not to get too excited.

Seems like you have possibly found a solution, that is great.

On the matter of the connection being fine for a period then declining, I have a friend who works for BT's Openreach division, he told me the connection points in the local distribution cabinet (the green junction box on the edge of villages etc.) are limited and shared, so what happens is you complain about the lack of speed and they send an engineer who swaps your connection to a less shared one, your speed increases, you're happy.
A month later someone else complains and thier connection point is swapped with yours, they are happy, your speed tanks...rinse & repeat.

BT seem to be very slow at increasing capacity when it comes to small towns and rural areas, they don't appear to want to spend any of thier massive profits on providing a better service.

LOL—I appreciate you even considered it, though. You're not the only computer-centric person I know who'd at least think about moving their entire household to get better Internet service. (I'd have to count myself with 'em!)

That doesn't surprise me. It's outrageous that there are not even any plans in the next five years, to run fibre to the premises to this area. No plans or timescale whatsoever. Despite the Gov originally saying 2025 all copper phone wires will be scrapped due to fibre run in (apparently that deadline is no more). If no plans in the next five years then it's a long time to be stuck with 2mbps average. There was a local scheme set up some years ago for wifi to an outdoor dish, which worked ok but they lost their funding and went bust.

It's about 1.5 miles to the nearest cabinet with fibre, some of that through fields, with 50 year old underground copper wire which no one wants to replace because they say it's fine and is going to be replaced with fibre (perhaps after my lifetime!).

Vodafone have been advertising 5G being available in the area in 3 months time - over 3 months ago and it still says in 3 months time - could be a very long time. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed with the Starlink.

I pay for 25Mbps and always get within 1% of it. It is Wireless DSL using a PoE modem. I only have cover about 1500 square feet so using 5G between my Wireless/Wi-Fi computers and Ethernet between Desktops and the Router gives me solid decent speed of downloads.

Maybe a mobile data is faster?
For sure with that kind of speed, you don't need an expensive modem/router.
I am sure it is an ISP/connection issue and not a router if you've already tried a different one.

FTTH is not available everywhere. Not Even FTTN.
I had FTTH since 6 years ago. Just one of the lucky ones like you.

2 Mbps is bullpoop, for even copper! Even moreso for constant packet loss with copper!
Usually, anything copper is much much better than satellite!

That was an FCC thing, due to some conflict. Even though I had a modem report 54.6 Kbps before. That was the first place that I got it in late-2002 or 2003.

But after moving, it dropped to 40 Kbps and sometimes 38 Kbps! Even when it got better towards the end again.
(Those speed drops were measured when downloading by checking the KB/s)

Tried that - not enough people in the area to qualify for a Gov scheme and costs extortionate.

Tried mobile data via a router. Speeds were better (between 7 and 10mbps) but wild fluctuations and it would drop out a lot. Stepson hated it as such high ping for gaming. We were better with a stable 5mbps. Until it wasn't 5mbs any more or even working at all sometimes!

Max available here is 8mbps with any provider as it's limited by openreach network. And yes at 2mbps it really isn't much better than dial up. Which is what was here before. Moved here just over 6 years ago and no broadband was available. Then they ran fibre to the cabinet so we got "superfast" FTC at between 4 and 7mbps. But only max 5 really and now not even that.

The connection speed and consistency is related to the length of the wires involved from the junction box to the OP's property, the number of physical connections along that length and the condition of the copper, its coatings and the connectors.
If all those factors cause too high a noise to signal ratio the speed will be stepped down for consistency to allow for less retries with sent/ recieved data as it becomes garbled.

I am on BT's 'fibre' system as is nextdoor, if I spit out my front door I will hit the junction box, we both get 80mbps (8 Megabytes per second) consistently but a relative who lives 10 house down from me struggles to get 3 - 5 Megabytes per sec and has terrible broadband drop out.
The telegraph poles in the village look like an explosion in a spaghetti factory, except the one nearest me which has only 6 wires in & out.

The only thing I hope for people like @Hazel123 is that an independent provider lays full fibre at some point, Gigaclear has done so in my village with the spurs already up to the front door and offer speeds of 200 - 900Mbps for a little less per month than BT's hybrid system.

Yep. 1.5 miles underground - hate to think what condition the copper wire is, it's so old. To be fair they didn't think it would work at all at first. But officially we are supposed to get 8mbps. There are some private companies doing schemes in some areas but not the more rural ones with odd properties rather than a whole village.

But usually what truly happens at that point AFAIK is they still don't cover the last few miles (hopefully it will be much less than that, but I suppose you never know something until you know...) for those who live just outside that particular area where the majority of people are at. If that turns out to be the case, then probably I would just try to convince those few people I needed to convince to let me set up a train of these ones onto their property:
