Sleep/Suspend works very well on Tumbleweed, but not on Windows 11

I bought an ASUS TUF A15 FA506NC in late 2024. It’s amazing performance-wise, but ever since I got it, it just can’t sleep on Windows. At first I thought it was the hardware, but to my surprise, it only takes 2 seconds to actually sleep once I close the lid on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed (or any other distro for that matter which is even more confusing), so clearly that’s on Windows. I’ve been looking the issue up for years now, S0 is the only supported mode on my end, S3, which is the legacy sleep mode, is restricted and not supported. If you have any inputs on the situation, I’d love to hear it.

Your PowerCfg -a results show that you do not have S3 Sleep i.e. you have no sleep mode [just hibernation].
No ifs, buts or maybes.
- S0 Modern standby is not a sleep mode but a low power idle mode.
- Your computer enters S0 Modern standby as soon as the display turns off.

Given these facts, what is your question?

Some people have reported success in disabling S0 Modern standby [aka S0 Low power idle] but others have reported that doing so does not result in S3 Sleep being enabled. It all depends on what the computer maker has done with the Bios.
I have seen a computer become uncontrollable*** after disabling S0 Modern standby so it is not a step to be taken lightly. At least make a new backup of all your own files and a system image before attempting it.

I no longer disable S0 Modern standby. I learnt how to tame it instead - I discovered that the way to allow scripts to run during S0 Modern standby was to set the Power options entry Sleep after to Never.

The issue is that as soon as it goes into S0 status, the fans rev up at maximum speed and I notice the laptop going hot as well. That's why I was aiming to change low power idle mode to actual sleep mode, which clearly the motherboard is capable of. Nevertheless, I thank you for the info, it taught me a thing or two about modern standby actually.

EDIT: Okay, so when I disabled S0, now only Hibernate is available. So I'm either left with hibernation, or just taming S0 so it doesn't spin the fans at max speed or overheat the laptop.

That used to be reported a lot for S0 Modern standby during its early years.
- I have not seen a report of it for ages.
- I have never understood it.
I think you need to ask your computer maker about it - perhaps it's driver-related?

I mean, the laptop is an FA506NC, and ASUS has not been of much help to other people having this issue either, so I have zero clue why this happens.

EDIT: Oh yes, it's set to S0 Modern Standby Network disconnected
