Slow read speed from USB-C 3.2 on external SSD on MSI Z16 HX Studio Laptop (A13VGTA) Windows 11

I've just purchased this laptop for video editing.

I work from an external SSD which I use on my PC and other laptops.

When I tried to open and run my video files the read speed of the USB-C is too slow to read the video files. I ran a speed check on CrystalDiskMark and the read speed was max 3.74 MB/s, jurrasically slow! The Write speed was up to 796.98 MB's

I plugged the same SSD into the Thunderbolt port next to the USB-C and this registered speeds of up to 1035.32 MB/s.

Is there a problem with this USB-C port or the software?

I want to use the Thunderbolt for my monitor, so I need the USB-C to perform as it should so I edit my video files. right now it can't even play more than a second back without pausing or lagging.

Not the best start to a brand new laptop. Can anyone help with a solution? Is it likely to be a driver?

This is the read speed using the external SSD plugged into the USB-C 3.2

And this is the read speed with the same external SSD and cable using the Thunberbolt 4 port

I have since updated the Bios from the MSI website, and I can now playback video from the SSD on windows media player with no buffer/lag/stopping. The files still lag/stop in Premiere Pro.

I've also noticed that the USB-C 3.2 is also a display port but when plugging into a monitor the windows display setting can't detect a monitor. A monitor only works on the Thunderbolt socket.

Thanks B

Possibly a hardware problem, the USB-C port is faulty. If the USB-C port supports 10G (10 Gigabits/s), the results in both ports should be similar, because the Thunderbolt port speed is limited by the external SSD, which appears to work at 10G.

Try to run the computer hardware diagnostics, it may detect the problem.

Hi!
Are these the ports on your notebook "

Do you have the MSI Center or Pro version?
I can only find your notebook version in the EU and not in the North American markets.
Do you have these diagnostic tools in MSI Center and if so, run them:

If you can't fix it here, you might consider going to the MSI Forums.

Your notebook is considered a Gaming notebook.
The first thing they will ask is for you to perform a EC reset.
This is done by holding down the power key (ON button)
for 25 seconds. Even if the notebook wants to start, just keep
pressing the power key until the time is up. You will need the
power adapter attached to the notebook to restart it.

A few other possibilities to consider:

Are you using the same cable for both your thunderbolt connecting and the connection to the other USB-C port? Cables can make a huge difference. Also, if you use an adapter, for example, to go from a USB-C connection to a USB-A connection, be aware that many such adapters are not bi-directional. What I mean by that, is that if you plug them into a USB-C one way, you get only USB 2 speed, but flip it 180 degrees and you get the full USB 3 speeds. I know that seems counter-intuitive because USB-C cables can be plugged in with either side "up", but many USB-C adapters don't follow the same rules :-)

They asked me to do exactly this and unistall the usb-c drivers.

I now have a good read speeds similar to what I'm getting from thunderbolt so I assume data transfer is good now. Premiere Pro still works smoothly with the thunderbolt and not so smoothly with the USB-C and the USB-C 3.2 Display Port doesn't recognize my device when I plug my monitor in

Hi!
You did not answer all my questions . Pls do so , so we can have a more detailed view of your notebook.
Could you post the MSI site for your PC as the North American site does not have the same notebooks
listed as the one you have.
Are these the USB connectors on your notebook?

1x Type-C (USB3.2 Gen2 /
1x Type-C (USB / DP / Thunderbolt™ 4) with PD charging
1x Type-A USB3.2 Gen2
1x SD Express Card Reader

Which external display do you have and does it have a HDMI input (connector)?
