Slow Shutdown

I'm trying to track down the reason it takes my machine 4-5 minutes to shutdown. I appears from the event log that most of the delay is a bunch of DCOM errors failing to shutdown or startup during shutdown. I'd like to see if there's a fix to this to speed up shutdown or reboot operations. I have a second machine running the same version of Windows that doesn't have the same issue. Both are new machines freshly installed about a month ago.

I attached the event log section during shutdown and the subsequent startup. Startup is not a problem, it proceeds at a normal pace.

I cleared the log right before I did the shutdown so there wasn't a ton of stuff to cloud the issue.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Make sure you have latest bios.

Eliminate software conflict. Put system in a clean boot state and try a shutdown. If all works as expected in clean boot, it's a matter of process of elimination to find which software is causing it. Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

Eliminate it being a 3rd party driver using safe boot. Boot to Safe Mode in Windows 11

I was kinda' hoping that all the event log entries showing where the significant delay was would be useful in narrowing it down so I wouldn't have to spend several hours taking out programs one at a time.

I have the latest BIOS, but I don't think this is the fault of the hardware.

You don't "take them out" one at a time. You do it in groups to narrow it down.

if you have fast start up enable try disabling fast start up and then try the shut down.
as fast start up can cause shutdown delays.

I don't use Fast start, I guess I'll have to see how to narrow this down.

My reluctance is due to the fact that I can startup and if I shutdown after a 10-15 minutes of time I have no issues with a long shutdown. If it were one of the startup applications, I'd think it would be a problem right after I got booted up. It's only if the system has been running a day or two that the problem surfaces.

please check the reliability monitor
control panel > security & maintenance > maintenance > reliability monitor

that should give you an indication of anything playing up.

Some good info above, + on a longshot - when that happens to me - I find I need an SFC /scannow comes back with errors that it fixes. good luck John.

Well, there's something unexpected there. There are a few instances of this error, they so happen to occur probably. Odd as it's referring to a problem with my GPU, which I don't know has any problem.

You could also check in the Component Services:

Follow the numbers and see if there are any Errors .
If there are, click on it and see description on the bottom part
of that section:

Mine was MSI Center which I had to uninstall and reinstall to get it to work right again.

I did a DISM and SFC run before I did a shutdown. They found no issues. I do a DISM first to rebuild the image store, then the SFC to fix any of the OS files from the checked image store.

You may be onto something there, it is complaining about the Gigabyte Control Center, two errors in a row.

I uninstalled all the Gigabyte crap, I found multiple people having similar issues with their bloated junk. Quite a few pointed to the exact same module that is being flagged, so I suspect that might be the issue.

I'll run a few days and see if a shutdown doesn't hang now.

You might find that it's bloat but, it might serve you well to make sure you really don't need it.
MSI Center adjusts the fans and the overclock and a bunch of other things that I Really need to
tweak once in a while.

Also, make sure that , when you uninstall one of those apps that you might need a special uninstall
tool from Gigabyte to complete the uninstall. MSI has one such app that if you don't use well, it's
back to the drawing board.

Well, I uninstalled it, and a reboot and restart went just fine. I also don't see the errors with the Gigabyte files in event viewer.
