Slow startup after logon (How measure time for items??)

Hello everyone,

Most of the time my computer will startup OK after logon.
But sometimes it takes some minutes to rollout the startup.
Boot time is OK (< 25 sec), but after logging on, the issues sometimes pops up.
No alarming alerts in Event Viewer
SFC scan did not change things.
Task manager isn't giving directions either.

What can I do to investigate what startup item is causing this?
Years ago there was a tool that measured these times (per item/app), but too long agoo to remeber what it was.

Are you thinking of boot trace?

Try deleting the content of "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Temp\" and see if it helps.
Also open task manager and check startup apps. Disable those you do not want to auto-start at logon.

Here's how to fix slow boot startup time on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Deleting Temp folder doesn't help sadly.
The fast startup doesn't change this.

It's not the boot I want to trace, I would like to trace the startup apps after logon, and what time they take.

You may get some useful info from Task Manager's 'Startup apps' tab. If you right-click on any of the column titles you have more columns you can show in addition to those shown by default. The 'CPU at start-up' column may be one of the more useful ones to add.



You can also right-click on any of the names and try disabling them to see if it helps....

I didn't know these posibilities....

No high values there. And 9 startup apps that are "not measured".
How could I measure these yet?

They should get measured at each start up, but sometime that doesn't happen.

Try a full restart from cold to see if that helps. Click Start and then the Power button, select Restart (not Shutdown, with Fast Startup that may only be a warm start up).

I had several cold starts today but no measurement of these startup apps.
Do you know another tool that keeps track on the startup and can give me a hint which one is stalling the startup for a while ?

I've not used it myself, so can't say if it will help, but the Windows Performance Toolkit would seem to fit the bill.

Thanks for pointing this out.
The problem is that it doesn't occur always.
When I do a (true) restart from the Power Down option, most of the time it will start good and there is nothing to troubleshoot anymore.

That makes is so frustrating.
Years ago I remember there was a program that gave every start-time for every item (kernel parts until startup-apps included. That must be abt the Windows 98 ages
But there is nu alternative for it, is there??

Sorry to disturb you with this, but I don't know where else to ask advice
I tried several things to find out why my Windows 11 is sometimes stalling after login, but to avail.

What strikes me most is, that when I see nothing happens, I do a restart, and then after login (instantly* all things are there (so started and functional).
Does that point to something that you know maybe?

When this happens, check all the tabs in Resource Monitor to see if any process is using a high amount of any of your system resources that may be causing this.


In addition, you could test restarting the explorer process to see if it may help to avoid a full restart.

I can't say for sure this is the same program I used years ago or not. If not, it looks very simular to it. I'm not recommended it. I'm just posting the link so you can check it out. I just downloaded it and extracted the files from the installer so I could check it and run it without installing it. Scans clean in both Defender and Malwarebytes, and the interface is good. Offers both light and dark modes, too. For obvious reasons, you have to set it to run at startup, and that's the first thing it asks you to do when you run it for the first time. If I needed it, I'd give it a try.

Makes sense that It would have to run at startup. I used this or a very simular program years ago. I don't even remember what Windows version I was running at the time. I do know it was before I updated to Windows 8 so it was Win 7 or earlier.

What I can recompose about every time: when I wait longer then -about- half a minute or more to logon to Windows then the startup apps are started slow (aka "the problem").
When I logon when the logon screen is there and do that "right away" then the startup apps are started "at once" and no delay in that.

Anyone has any idea in that?
I am very curious what that might be.
No other anomalies discovered with resource monitor etc.

Yes I did. The registry was all that time (screenshot) : and made no difference.
