Snappy Driver

I have opened Snappy Driver many times over several months and it has only ever said my drivers are up to date and never said one needs updating. Surely it should occasionally find one that needs updating?

Those third-party driver update programs are complete rubbish and I would recommend not using them. If you want to reliably check for driver updates, then go to the manufacturer's support page or your motherboard page.

Free driver updaters lack the money to grow. I find Driver Easy to be reliable, you can use free version to find the outdated drivers and once you know the version, download them from MS or Softpedia, since free version has a limited speed.

You would think so - but there was a recent update earlier this month, IIRC, and yet nothing new was found.

The programs are only as good as the database of drivers it can bring to the table. If the developer hasn't had time to update the databases (or, more likely, individual people were maintaining different databases, and the ones that were getting updated most frequently not have no maintainer) then this will happen.

I've noticed the same thing with it for several months now. I've relegated it to only check once a month, until I see news that things have changed again with it.

It also depends on your system. If you have an older system with older hardware, there may never be anymore driver updates. My system is 4-years old now, and the only "driver updates" I get are for my GPU.

With that, I never use driver update programs, only check the vendor sites for my hardware to include my motherboard.

I use Snappy Driver because the drivers from MSI's website are old, and sometimes it takes them ages to update, and sometimes they don't update at all.

Examples:


I can find most of those at other places (AMD, Intel, etc.) but I cannot install any newer drivers for the Killer stuff (have a thread about how they all break my machine), and I cannot install random Realtek drivers as they are missing the MSI specific extensions for my mobo (MoKiChU kindly built me a package so I'm actually on 9500 drivers, so much more current than 9057).

Up until the driver packages seem to be abandoned, though, Snappy Driver Installer Origin did a great job of finding things that had updated / more optimal drivers than the default Windows drivers, and that were usually not available elsewhere. It's the only driver tool I've ever trusted - because you get the packages downloaded locally to your machine, not randomly pulled from who knows where. You can inspect them yourself. Although a complete install (including all packages, even those that don't apply to your system, is north of 25 GB).

Every other driver update utility has been crap, even DUMo.

I recently found one that *might* be a worth replacement but it, too, is not finding anything new, so....

On my GT73 I have the Killer 1525 package and Intel will not update those anymore.
Bluetooth OTH is still being updated by Intel. go figure.

Intel is updating the packages. The updated packages newer than that package at MSI fail to install.

Both are very good

FWIW I refuse to use anything by IOBit after what they did back in the day with basically stealing the anti-malware definitions from Malwarebytes.

I one I found to be decent is DriversCloud.

I use my own driver update package.... "Manual checks". Never have to worry about spam, malware, of false positives. It simply works

Never had to worry about any of those with Snappy either.

Sure beats scrolling through Station Drivers and other places to find updates for out of date drivers.

Mind you, I'm not a spring chicken about this either. I don't go willy nilly all across the Internet downloading things that are even possibly scurilious. If I use something, there's a good reason, and it's tried, tested and true. Not saying anyone else should use it - just that I don't recommend products that are lacking in reputation and / or safety. I know a thing or two because I've seen a thing or two.

That assumes I don't know what drivers I'm looking for, which would be wrong since I'm also no "spring chicken" about this either

And no.... I don't use Station Drivers and have never used them.

That said, for laptops I use the supplied driver / BIOS update app which takes care of those. For my custom desktop builds, I visit the sites of the hardware I chose.

I already provided evidence how the OEM for my build simply is not providing. I don't know how else I can relate the information that I either use extremely old drivers with latent issues or I find better, updated drivers.
