[SOLVED] What is this Asustek update available inside Windows Update?

System is that listed under "My Computer" below
CPU: Intel i9-13900k
Motherboard Asus ProArt Z790 Creator Wifi (with the very latest bios # 1203)
No other Asus components in the PC

This is a new PC that I've worked hard on during the building and configuration of to get it stable. I don't want to add this update needlessly.

Anyone shed any light on this. Is it some kind of firmware?

It's probably a driver update.

Couple questions...

1. In Programs & Features or anywhere in REVO, do you see any ASUS entries?
2. Did you install Armoury Crate?
3. Did you install any other ASUS utilities?

If memory serves me those drivers marked as "system" are chipset drivers.

Purpose of those optional drivers is to troubleshoot existing drivers, ex. if existing driver doesn't work as expected.
I never install them because you can always find latest drivers on manufacturer's website.

Only Asus app is MyAsus used to register the motherboard. It shows the correct bios number and doesn't try and install anything else like drivers.

Re Armoury Crate. I dislike that app and don't use it.

Microsoft, for years, has been trying to take over the delivering of drivers.
My best advice is to block driver delivery with Windows Updates and just get them from ASUS if/when needed.

I use the registry method, here... to block driver inclusion in WU...

I'd guess that at least 50% of the time, using the Microsoft drivers, causes problems.

It's possible to LAN but I've googled out the version and it points to "ASUS System Control Interface"

Keep in mind even though you don't see a yellow triangle icon in device manager you can still see optional driver offered for download.
There is MS blog somewhere which explains optional updates stating that their purpose is troubleshooting.

I better be careful what I say about Armoury Crate I might start using rude words that are a no-no around here! :ffs:

When I updated the bios yesterday I religiously followed the instructions listed on the mobo support page you posted. This said to make sure a specific Intel Management Engine firmware is installed in the OS ("Do update the intel ME to version 16.1.27.2176"). This I did from Mokichu's updates.

Like many experienced techies around here I am not big on installing this stuff willy nilly without knowing what it is first.

I found another link on Google which reckons it is a thing called "ASUS System Control Interface v3" which is to do with ACPI.
Perhaps MS should butt out of this sort of stuff?

I just found that as well.
I've been running ASUS boards for 20 years. I always block Microsoft driver updates, and always get the drivers from ASUS.
I've never had any issues. I don't get BSODs. I don't get those 10 digit error IDs.

I get the AMD (in my case), chipset drivers, straight from AMD.
I get my vid card drivers from Nvidia.
I get all the other drivers, straight from the ASUS motherboard driver page.

I "like" not having BSODs or errors.

NOTE: If overclocking and doing the requisite stress testing... BSODs are unavoidable until you get everything tweaked properly. Other than during overclocking and stress testing... there really shouldn't be any BSODs.

Keep in mind that occasionally, some less than stellar 3rd party software can also cause errors or BSODs.

Which... kind of makes one wonder...

In the past, I always got my chipset drivers from ASUS as well. But... with the weird security guess work that came with Win 10 and especially Win 11... I decided to move up one manufacturer, to AMD for my chipset drivers.

I'd recommend doing the same for Intel chipset drivers... but Intel has a really strange system for chipset drivers, that I'm honestly not familiar with.

It has just occurred to me that when Intel categorises a device as legacy, you have to use the manual controls on that webpage I linked you to. The automatic search done by the Intel Driver & support assistant only applies to in-support devices.
I had to use manual searching for a legacy Intel device some years ago and that part of the Intel site was pretty bewildering. I did not know about HardwareIDs at that time so perhaps that would have made the search more straightforward.
Perhaps that 'really strange system' was actually an experience of using the Intel site for a legacy device rather than specifically for chipset drivers???

I like AMD's method better. You download one driver (it has up to six parts).
During the install, the driver knows which parts you need and selects them.
It's a one click affair. I "like" one click things.

I think these are not for the processor companion chipset, but for Asus specific chip on the motherboard. If it is an update to a hardware driver, then you should be able to find it listed in device manager.

The Intel Driver and Support Assistant states that software and drivers are up to date.

I'm not installing this update on Windows Update currently especially bearing in mind the system is stable. Some Intel updates are pushed out via WU as well by Microsoft.

It is also unhelpful that Asus\MS have such an anonymous\meaningless name for this update.

I found this thing in the Device Manager. It is related to ACPI.

I'll try and find the inf file shown in the screen capture below to see I can figure out what this really is doing.

I found the inf file shown in the screenshot and viewed its contents.

The answer is that the driver shown in Windows Update relates to ACPI functions and general system management.
Asus or MS really need to give the driver in WU a more meaningful name.
