Solved ssd nvme fast transfer at first then slow

Hi all
i have a Samsung SSD 990 PRO when i transfered a file over the the second nvme which is a KINGSTON SNV2S1000G it when at 3.5 gb per second for a couple of seconds when the speed tanked see image attached. Just wondering is this normal. also the file was a folder that contains a game 70 gb size.

I think so.
The main thing is reading from the drive.
Large files should rarely be copied.

That is an issue with large file copying/moving, first reads the information into memory then writes to the destination drive. This may also be a time when the size of Virtual Memory [swapfile/pagingfile] may play a part.

i have pagefile enabled .but i have 64gb of ram .

i have crystal disk info to montior my drive they say 100 percent the two nvme plus there only 1 month old

The Pagefile is system managed on the nvme at 4 gb

This is totally normal - the initial burst of speed is due to the copy cache being filled up and then pc slows down as it is writing as fast as it can process incoming and outgoing data.

It is a bit of an illusion really - ot is the average speed over the whole copy action that os really important


In the end, the windows copy algorithms are pretty crap, particularly with very large files.

Frankly, the whole window copy algorithms need to be updated to reflect modern high speed drives (but hey we do not have enough search mechanisms (276 at last count) so focus is needed on that in case a guy wants to do a search whilst playing angry birds lol).

You can try alternative tools like robocopy with multithreading which can have a big impact.

As an aside, an important thing not well understood is you need usb c cables if writing ro external usb drives capable of writing at 200 to 400 mbps.

There's another possible factor with M.2 drives: thermal throttling.

That usually takes at least a few minutes to kick in, though.

Hmm i didn't think it would thermal throttle under 65

These are for sustained reads, not writes. I'm not sure what the M.2's temperature was when it throttled. (I think I could live with 7GBps, though.)
