The word "Close" has been inserted on my Desktop and remains when I bring up Outlook or Edge or anything at all. I don't know how it arrived, but I would like to track it down and get rid of it.
Any ideas please

Have you tried just rebooting the computer?

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
This may not help, but worth a shot. Solving that problem more often than not requires a reboot as Ghot noted or a logoff / logon for me, but give this a shot:

Press, all at the same time WinKey + CTRL + SHIFT + B. Yes, that is 4 keys. This resets the display adapter. Screen should flash and you may hear an audible beep.

I have one computer where the display will simply not wake from sleep sometimes and that key sequence always resolves that issue.

Looks like the tooltip text when you hover the mouse (move the mouse there and wait a couple of seconds) on the close button. What happens if you hover the mouse on the close button? I would try to reinstall the graphics drivers, just in case.

Your description can be read in multiple ways. Please clarify something for me. Are you saying that with all windows closed, you still see that on your desktop?
If you open just file explorer, do you see that?
OR does it take opening Edge before you see it.

Settings > Performance Options > Visual Effects tab.
Search for it in settings, it is old style dialogue.

Try changing options like:
Fade or slide ToolTips into view.
Enable Peek.
Show Shadows under mouse pointer.

Maybe some of the other options.

Apply > OK
Restart.

It is changing them that may sort things out in your user profile, minor errors whatever.

Maybe go to these areas with same principles, new Settings route.
Settings > Accessibility > Visual Effects.
Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch.

Also use the usual DISM and SFC command line stuff, guides are on here.

Make sure you have no corrupt system files that is causing this problem. Open a command prompt as administrator and type dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
When complete restart. Then open command prompt as admin again and run sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair

I appreciate all the help that I have received here; I do forget the like button from time to time.

In this case, problem solved. I had already done a couple of reboots and driver resets. What fixed it, I think is completely uninstalling everything nvidea then reinstalling using the software provided. Now I can see the CLOSE button.

Thanks to all.

What's the best way to mark this as solved??
