Solved Swaping SSDs (Hardware swap)

My Dell Inspiron 3511 laptop suddenly powered off and I can't power it back on. I suspect something malfunctioned or got fried but upon a visual inspection I can't see anything wrong. Anyway, I don't have time to investigate right now. My sister has a working Dell Inspiron 3520 laptop. How good of an idea is to swap the SSDs so I can recover the data from the SSD in my laptop? See, my latest backup is 3 months old. Both SSDs are Windows 11 boot drives . Will Windows go along with the swap?

It would be safer to use an external USB adapter for your SSD.

There are inexpensive adapters for both 2.5" SATA drives and M.2 drives. It's not clear which type your Dell Inspiron 3511 has. (Could be either.)

I have this one - you can just take your drive out and put it in this external casing, plug it into another computer and copy the files off.

    Originally installed with a 500gb H10 Optane ssd
It should work but I also have usb to nvme m.2 adapters to back everything up on another drive just in case. Again, it will most likely work just doing the swap. Be patient as it may take a bit of time to do the reconfigure.

I think the assumption is that you might simply put your drive into your sisters laptop and reboot using your drive. Thus the reconfiguring to the new hardware. As others have suggested it is perhaps easier to simply pull the drive(s) from your dead laptop and use an external enclosure to save/access your Data.

According to the Dell Support page for your Inspiron 3511 it could have been supplied with either a 2230 or a 2280 PCIe NVMe SSD, the 2230 is up to 1TB, the 2280 is up to 2TB.

Go here and enter your Service Tag: Support | Dell US to get the specs for your exact PC. On the Overview page, click the 'View product specs' link in the 'Quick links' box on the right. It will list the original configuration as shipped. Scroll down until you find the SSD. You may need to Google the part name to find out what size it is. My Dell has a 512GB Toshiba (aka Kioxia) BG4 SSD.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

For my purpose I don't use it as a permanent enclosure, I use it for the interface to save the data to a different drive. Because of this I don't put the cover on it, I just insert it into the connector and rubber band it in place to keep it secure during the transfer. The half or full size should not matter unless you're looking for a permanent usb home for it. I use the adapter as a tool rather than an actual portable drive enclosure.

The one thing I haven't seen mentions is the possibility that the drive is dead; probably not, because you didn't mention being told the system couldn't find a hard drive.

Still, something to consider . . .

Thank you. The 3511 says "SSDR,256G,P34,30S3,TOSHIBA,BG4". It looks like a 256GB version of the same drive. So, it must be a 2230.

I thought about it too but why would the system power down if the drive died? I had a power down in another laptop. Then a visual inspection revealed a browned out part in the motherboard. A new motherboard fixed it. But this time I can't see anything on the motherboard.
