Switching from Windows 10 to 11

My first time on this forum, so if there is an article on here that would help, just point me in the right direction :)

I recently upgraded my BIOS and now I am eligible to upgrade to Windows 11, but when I get on the update screen, I don't see a button to upgrade to 11. It says that I am compatible though. I tried to update through another site, but after it runs the process, it does not go over to 11, it stays on 10, even after I restart.

If I don't have the button to update, what is the best way to go from Windows 10 to 11?

Download the Windows 11 ISO file provided by Microsoft. Once the ISO file is saved on your computer, double click on it to mount it. A new "Virtual DVD" will open - run setup.exe from it.

One great thing about W11 is MS made it easier to download iso without having to spoof browsers.

@Outsider418, this is definitely the best way to upgrade.

As a minor clarification - run setup.exe from root drive, not setup.exe is sources folder.

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

Windows should (eventually) offer the upgrade to Windows 11 in Windows Update. This may not happen immediately though as Windows Update first has to run compatibility checks, it often takes some time getting round to that. Eventually you would see this:

As others have said, if you are sure your PC is compatible then the easiest way in to download the ISO, mount it, then run the Setup you'll find there to start an in-place upgrade. It's not only simple to do, but it is also much faster than letting Windows Update do the upgrade for you.

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

DISABLE non-Microsoft:
a) antivirus software
b) firewall software
c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

Only one caveat I've run into, Win11 is not available as x86/32-bit, I had to reformat a computer from 32-bit Win7 to get Win11 but otherwise it was properly compatible.

Check your CBS and DISM log files to determine what is causing that error.

You can do that by following the steps below

Run Command Prompt as Administrator
Type notepad C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log
Type notepad C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log
Look for the keywords 0xC1900101 or 0x30018

Good afternoon.

I ran the reports, but neither string showed up. I updated my Nvidia drivers and unplugged everything but my keyboard, mouse, and displays (the only other thing I had plugged in was my speakers), and I keep getting the same error. I guess I'll try to dig a bit deeper and see what I can find. Thanks for your responses on this, I appreciate it.

It can be caused by many things. Try suggestions here, or backup your data and perform a clean install. [Fixed] The Installation Failed in the FIRST_BOOT Phase in Win10?

The ultimate fix could be a clean install of Windows 11.

That can be quite painful. I find it not too bad if I prepare for it carefully (collecting installers, etc.), but there may still be a number of hours of work involved.

Despite the obvious, , , time and effort, to do a clean install, it just has so many benefits.
For 40+ years, that's the only way I've upgraded from one OS to the next higher level.
I think I've got it down to a Science. (or, at least I should have, by now)

In my last upgrade from Windows 8.1, to Windows 11, I first CLONED my 8.1 SSD to a spare HD,
then I performed the CLEAN install of Win-11, from my bootable Flash Drive. It automatically deleted partitions and reformatted my SSD.

After some tweaking and fine tuning, I began to re-install all of my favorite programs. Some were getting pretty old so I just went on-line and downloaded the latest versions, that I was sure would work well with Windows 11. So now I've got not only a fresh and clean OS, but a lot of new programs as well. Even my Epson printer, got new and updated drivers directly from Epson, plus a little Firmware upgrade as well.
And, I've still got my old Windows 8.1 safely tucked away on a spare HD, for future use if I want, or just for archival purposes.

I'm still finding new ways to make Windows 11 faster and more user friendly.
