System Reserved Partition (F)

Hi,

I've accidently formatted my driver F which says System Reserved (Windows 11), does this mean my system wont boot no more or is there an easy fix for this? or would I need to format and install windows 11 again?

Usually system reserved is for restore tools not booting.

Yeah that one in front of C is boot so don't shut down or restart.
Someone will have to help you rebuild it.

Actually partition 4 is an EFI partition and on a UEFI system that's the partition it boots from.

I'm at a loss as to why a disk would have both a System Reserve partition and an EFI partition, a System Reserve partition is normally only there to boot a Legacy boot machine. Also, there are two Recovery partitions, so this disk has seen some mileage over its life and may have some 'leftovers' from previous configurations.

What is the history of Windows installs on this disk? Is the bios set for Legacy boot or UEFI? Has it ever been converted from Legacy/MBR to UEFI/GPT? The disk must currently be GPT as it has 5 partitions (MBR has a maximum of 4).

@NavyLCDR may be able to make more sense of this than I can....

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

I upgraded from windows 10 to 11, didn't do a fresh install, it's using UEFI.

Then the EFI partition should be the boot partition. I still don't understand why it has/had a System Reserve partition too, but on a UEFI system that should play no part in booting.

It does say on the image that C is boot, page file, crash dump and basic data partition so does that mean the F partition isn't needed and should still boot? as when I formatted disk F i got no warning as I was tired and had 2 Flash drives inserted and was meaning to format one of those and not the F disk.

Your EFI partition is intact and unmolested. On a UEFI system that is loaded first and then loads the boot partition - your C: drive. I can see no reason why it should not boot as it is. What a System Reserve partition was doing the is a mystery, there should not be one on a clean install for a UEFI system.

The EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) system partition or ESP is a partition on a data storage device (usually a hard disk drive or solid-state drive) that is used by computers adhering to the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). When a computer is booted, UEFI firmware loads files stored on the ESP to start installed operating systems and various utilities.

An ESP contains the boot loaders or kernel images for all installed operating systems (which are contained in other partitions)...

This is my disk part result on a fresh clean install of Win11, the disk was wiped of all partitions before install, there is a small reserved partition (each of my 4 GPT disks have them), but they do not have, and I believe should not have a drive letter associated.

When windows 10 was installed it was installed using the old Legacy/MBR then when i switched to windows 11 I switched to the UEFI boot.

Of course, just use Partition Wizard. I would lose the Recovery Partitions and move the EFI System Partition to the end.

I've accidently formatted my driver F which says System Reserved (Windows 11), does this mean my system wont boot no more or is there an easy fix for this? or would I need to format and install windows 11 again?

System Reserved Partition is also called MSR (Microsoft System Reserved) and is the smallest of all partitions that a clean install automatically creates. It is usually 16 MB in size. In your case, it is 50 MB. Leave it as it is.

EFI partition (which is normally 100 MB) in size is the one that contains the boot files for all the OS installed on the disk. This is the most important partition for Windows to be able to boot. You can increase it to 300 MB to future proof it.

Recovery partition contains the WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) files that is useful for troubleshooting Windows. It is usually over 500 MB. I would recommend increasing it to 1024 MB to future proof it. This partition isn't necessary to boot into Windows, and you can do without it as long as you don't have any Windows related problems. But it is recommended to have one as it will be very handy in case of a system crash AND you don't have a separate RECOVERY DISK (or System Repair Disk) at hand.

You need just one of each of the above partitions even when you have multiple OS installed on the disk.

I prefer to keep them to the left most in this order: EFI, MSR, Recovery.

I keep the largest partition on the rightmost to install the OS. This provides me the flexibility to resize the OS partition to create a Files (data) partition, install another OS, etc.

It is very easy to recreate the EFI and Recovery partitions if they become corrupt or get deleted. I have a simple tutorial where I have listed the steps to recreate them. Check it out.

He has a 50 MB System Reserved Partition because it use to be a MBR/Legacy system that he converted to GPT/UEFI, so he no longer needs it.
It should have been 100 MB, no clue as to why the installer made a 50 MB SR Partition. He added the letter F to the System Reserved partition, so he could have somehow shrunk it to 50 MB by mistake. A System Reserved partition on a MBR/Legacy install should never have a letter.

It is a very small partition and is sitting at the beginning of the disk. I would just leave it as it is.

But why 100 MB?

A System Reserved Partition has always been a 100 MB Partition, that`s what size the installer makes it on a MBR/Legacy install, going way back to W7.
It`s useless to keep it and he wants it added to C, regardless of its size.
