Windows 10
Suddenly one of my Windows 11 laptops won't do anything
that has to do with "System Restore". Just get an error
about "Shadow copy error 0x80042306".

- Tried "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
- Failed at about 80% (could not find something)

- Tried "sfc /scannow"
- Failed at about halfway

- Tried "in-place upgrade/repair install"
- Went through without any errors or warnings

Still same error on all "System restore" operations

- Tried agin "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
- Went through without any errors or warnings

- Tried "sfc /scannow"
- Went through without any errors or warnings

Still same error on all "System restore" operations

- Tried "chkdksk /f"
- Went through without any errors or warnings

Still same error on all "System restore" operations

Now I'm kind of out of options :-(
Anyone got any ideas on what to try?

What's happening that you want to perform a system restore?

""- Tried "in-place upgrade/repair install"
- Went through without any errors or warnings""

""

What needs to be fixed?

If you need a relatively quick fix some options are:

reset save files
custom install
clean install

Was a system restore attempted using clean boot or from safe mode or from Windows RE?

If you want to troubleshoot log files can be collected.

Not much can be done for System Restore tool try different restore points you can also try in-place upgrade to repair Windows 11.

You can do a repair install of Windows 11 by performing an in-place upgrade without losing anything.

OK. As you see I have allready tried both in-place upgrade and dism and sfc.

Also tried re-registering vss services.
There are no existing restore points.
But I cannot enable restore on any drives.
And I cannot create a restore point.

Also checked all vss providors and all are "stable" and "no errors".

If I try to enable system restore on a drive I get these:
1) System Restore error 0x80042308, The specified object was not found.
2) Cannot configure the disk area used for system protection (translated from norwegian).
An error occured with the shadow copy providor (0x80042306).

Eventlog says from the vss service:
Error in service Volume Shadow copy. Unexpected error
DeviceControl(\\?\Volume(110eeecd-7d60-4c26-8d30-31c2b56529e0)
hr = 0x80070005, No access.

(clicking that volume link opens the system disk c: btw)

If system restore fails while in each:

normal boot
clean boot
safe mode
Windows RE

then attempt a system restore using another user.

Are you trying to enable System protection on Windows 11 partition?

Also, system restore not very reliable as we all suggest you create image backup your system much more secure process that way.

System Restore has always worked before on both my Windows 10 and my two Windows 11 systems.
I do have image backup software (Aomei Backup), but that won't work now either (not Aomei Partition Assistent either).
And restore of image backup (boot Aomei from USB to restore) does not fix this error either.
And an in-place upgrade did not fix it either. Not dism or sfc wither. Very very strange.

Any clue on why vvs does not have access to the disk?

This is almost hilarious (if I hadn't wasted so much time before I accidently saw this).

Something (I don't have any idea on what) seems to have messed with the Defender settings.

"Protected memory access" (translated from norwegian so sorry if not exact) was removed for:
- "rstrui.exe" on "\Device\HarddiskVolume2" (that is the C: drive with "System Restore")
- "SystemPropertiesProtection.exe" on "\Device\HarddiskVolume2"

As soon as I added them to the trusted applications System Restore worked again.
