Task Mgr says memory 2400; installed is 2666 and 3200


The confusion I reported in #11 and #14 above (CPU-Z calls Gigastone "Samsung") apparently stems from the fact that Gigastone in Taiwan assemble the modules, using chips from various trusted, reputable manufacturers, including Samsung. Seems these Gigastone modules have Samsung chips.

@Ghot: I think I am clear on that point, but the shots I posted make it look as though I'm not. And so it goes. Thanks.

@Wisewiz If you ever need some reading material to put you to sleep you can read my lengthy post here. But especially read my Post #66 of the outcome. Like you, I knew I could run at 2400 just fine and not know the difference in performance, but I was determined to get what I paid for and what Dell documentation said I should get. In the end, I was out the $80 and stuck with 2 sticks of Crucial ram I couldn't return but Dell let me keep the 2 sticks that came with the computer. Many hours went into this.

@glasskuter: Read most of the thread (oh, my!) and all of your post 66. Thank you. With your help and Berton's example (note that he's on 2400 with the latest setup of mixed RAM, regardless of the manufacturer's specs in his CPU-Z), I've got it, and I'm gonna fix it, and like you, I just want what I paid for, whether I can tell the difference or not.

Just a final postscript. Using the two new matched 2666 sticks in System One left me with the OEM 2666 sticks, and with 16GB of 2400 OEM RAM in System Two, so it seemed reasonable to use the System One leftover 2666 sticks in System Two. The two original sticks in Sys Two and the two original sticks in Sys One are same brand, same size, but differ in speed. The installation in Sys Two worked exactly as I expected it to: the 2666 downclocked to match the board's requirements successfully, and now runs at 2400 perfectly well. Thus 4 x 8GB running at 2400MHz. Done.

It is not a good idea to mix RAM sets that are not the same in module manufacturer, ram chip manufacturer or speed. With mismatches the BIOS has to decide what to do and train it, which may be conservative - that might be the the only stable speed it could come up with.

Yeah, that was my first thought too. But I believe it is just two disparate sticks that the BIOS cannot get stable timings for at 2666, but can at 2400. Should not mix RAM of different manufacturer, CAS latency, and expect a god result. This has all of those factors.
