The future of seamless multi-device experiences powered by High Band Simultaneous (HBS) and proximity capabilities

 Qualcomm News:

From champion gamers to productivity pros, every second counts when you’re always on the move. Being able to seamlessly transfer your game play or workflow from your mobile device to a bigger monitor and back again in a cinch would be an ideal scenario, which is why Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. systematically revolutionized multi-device experiences in mobile devices with Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 and Qualcomm FastConnect 7900 Mobile Connectivity Systems.

A core Wi-Fi 7 capability is Multi-Link Operation (MLO), allowing for multiple connections to a device. Qualcomm Technologies implemented every form of MLO currently available, including High Band Simultaneous (HBS) Multi-Link, which is the ability to use two 5 and/or 6 GHz bands at the same time for the highest throughput and lowest latency currently possible.

Game-casting made seamless

The need for HBS has been growing due to the increase in high-quality, bandwidth intensive applications and files. A popular use case where HBS would provide tremendous value is game-casting, where a mobile phone or a handheld is used to cast content to a smart TV. Using HBS to game-cast allows the gamer to play on a larger screen where all connections are high speed, as opposed to introducing lag from the congested 2.4GHz band or a delay from alternating between the 5GHz or 6GHz bands.

Proximity for extended display

With FastConnect 7900, seamless experiences are taken to the next level with the application of both HBS and a full array of proximity technologies including Wi-Fi ranging, Bluetooth Channel Sounding and Ultra Wideband (UWB). By adding in proximity technologies, devices become more aware of other devices around them, making experiences across devices more seamless without the user having to manually intervene.

An example of how proximity technologies and HBS perfectly complement one another is the extended display use case. As seen above, a person using a laptop can leverage a tablet as a second screen. In this instance, both the presence and orientation of the tablet can be detected using UWB while HBS leverages high speed 5GHz and/or 6GHz connections between the access point, laptop and tablet simultaneously.

Next-level audio quality with XPAN

Another emerging use case where the combination of HBS and proximity can prove game changing is with audio. The demand for lossless music quality is growing, thanks to support for lossless audio by many of the major streaming services. With our recently announced Qualcomm S7 Pro Gen 1 Sound Platform, audiophiles can take advantage of Expanded Personal Area Network (XPAN) technology in their earbuds or headphones. This new platform uses micro-powered Wi-Fi and XPAN to create a more robust connection with low latency, higher throughput and broader coverage. With HBS applied, all connections are in the high-speed bands, ensuring the listener hears the maximum quality of the audio they are purchasing from streaming services.

No matter what you’re doing or where you are in the world, maintaining a continuous connection should always be a top priority. Our FastConnect systems and Wi-Fi 7 are engineered to raise the bar for wireless experiences across all modes of life, whether you’re on the go, in the office or in your own home. Because it’s no longer about us keeping up with technology — it’s about the technology keeping up with you.
