The Secure Boot update failed to update a Secure Boot variable with error Unknown HResult Error code: 0x800700c1 EventID 1796

I am getting the above error sporadically. Sometimes it happens when starting my laptop other times it shows up randomly.

All my drivers, according to Device Manager, are up to date.

SFC nor DISM found any errors.

Is this a Microsoft issue or is their a way to locate the issue causing the error?

you can try. disable secure boot in the BIOS and ..
1. update secure boot again
2. reset the TPM and update secure boot again

see if this corrects the error.

I appreciate your help. I did the suggestions and the error still persist. It may be a Microsoft issue!

I had that issue up until I enabled secure boot in the BIOS properly. Turned out even though I turned it on, there's more to getting the BIOS to actually do a secure boot. Once I did it properly, the error went away.

Enabling Secure Boot

As you stated, it was probably an update as the error started happening on May 2nd, probably about the time I was getting around to enabling Secure Boot, but didn't realize the whole process in the BIOS to actually get it working

Still no luck using info from gunrunnerjohn. No problem from switching secured boot to unsecured boot or visa versa. In fact I get sporadic error messages when I turn secure boot off that secured boot is off.

Checked drivers again, everything seems to be up to-date. SFC nor DSM finds any error.

You may have a different configuration issue than I had. Once I had Windows all set up for secure boot, I noticed it still wasn't performing a secure boot. That's when I went looking at the BIOS configuration. I had it enabled, but I didn't realize I had to clear the keys to kick start the process.

Since this occurred after the May 13th update, how can I go back to the version prior to this update? Go back is greyed out.

There are definitely issues in and around Secure Boot. Lots of people have them in their logs, they just never look and see them. Others find them popping up in their face and possibly, allegedly, causing other issues.

Are you getting errors somewhere other than your Event Log?

I'm current on updates, and secure boot is working, so it's not a universal issue with that update.

Here's the last few updates on my system, you could try rolling back KB5058411.

Levitate11 Yes, only getting errors in the event log. Don't seem to have any performance issues. Plus it's sporadic! I figured it was caused by this update but to be sure I did a recovery using the windows update method, like I figured the error still exist.

gunrunnerejohn I'm intermediate at best, how do I install a previous update without losing anything? I don't have an image and from what little I know it would require a clean install.

I do appreciate ya'll taken the time to help me.

I was getting an error related to secure boot and some variable update. I hunted a lot of posts at MS and elsewhere. No definitive fixes and some deep ratholes to spend your days scurrying down. Mine started about four days after the last Feature Update KB on 5/13. So, I don't know that it was related.

As a test I shut off secure boot... error gone. :thumbsup:

I might turn it back on at some point and see if it returns. Honestly... I'm not too worried about needing Secure Boot. It's a "nice to have" for me, not a requirement.

To uninstall a Windows 11 update, navigate to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, then select the update you want to remove and click "Uninstall"

You can only uninstall some updates, when I look at mine, I can only roll back more recent ones. If you haven't done a system cleanup, more will appear in the list. Here's what my system looks like...

gunrunnerejohn, only the recovery (Repair Version) I did today is listed in uninstall and is allowed to be uninstalled.

Levitate11 after you turned off secure boot are you seeing a warning in event viewer that secure boot is turned off? I did which is why I turned it back on. I figured since I'm going to get a warning might as well leave it on.

One of several reasons I decided to get Secure Boot working when I installed, I figured it was only a matter of time when I'd want or need it working.

No... the error about the Secure Boot variable went away and I see no messages at all related to secure boot. I'm on 24H2. I just shut it off in the BIOS and that was it.

I started to get this error on May 16th, which is when the 2025-05 security update (KB5058405) was installed. I've read that update was intended to fix secure boot issues. I get the error each time the task Secure-Boot-Update in Microsoft-Windows-PI runs. I'm still running 23H2.

I'm guessing Microsoft fixed something for some computers and created new errors for others when they put out that "fix."

From what I see in the notes for that KB5058405, it's specific to 22H2 and 23H2. There's a mention of a secure boot fix that supposedly only applies to Linux, but you know how that goes. For 24H2, the KB5058411 contains the same verbiage about Secure Boot.

As you say, they probably fixed some and broke others.
