I hate it when somebody posts a video like this without a few words of explanation, then I can decide if it is worth watching the video or not.

Sometimes I like to let the video speak for itself. I've seen videos like this before, pointing toward a better future with Windows. TBH if I could do everything on Linux that I do with Windows I rather doubt I'd be using Windows anymore.

Mate, I think Windows being or feeling threatened by another OS would be like me walking up to the London Symphony Orchestra with a Kazoo and saying “This sounds much better”

I have a vivid imagination. I just pictured an advertisement for Windows 12 featuring a huge orchestra of Microsoft engineers pulling kazoos and harmonicas out of their pocket protectors and playing Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Closing statement: Windows 12 . . . So much better!

IKR It would make for a great commercial!

Butt Kazoo’s would add an air of taste, or a taste in the air.

On a serious note. I wonder if there is someone out there trying to make a decent OS to rival Windows. An OS that could accomodate all the software that Windows can.
I suppose with all the propriatorey crap everywhere belonging to Microsoft, it would be near impossible.

I would not go so far as to say it couldn't be done but if it happened O, how the lawyers would be salivating!

The point is not about what the video says but that the original post does not give a brief summary what it is about. It does not have to make conclusions.

Of course, one could argue that less info means more will watch it rather than avoid it. Not me though LOL.

Well, he's making some big boasts and I've seen it before so I wouldn't hold my breath. I'm not overly concerned as this is mostly centred on gaming. The girls here have Steam accounts however, and they use them a lot. I really do think the time is ripe for it and Windows needs to stop resting on their laurels. Steam really is a thing and if gamers can get better results with a Steam OS they'll cross over in a heart beat. Windows needs to focus more on developing a robust OS that doesn't exclude so many users instead of resorting to so much gimmickry and fancy packaging. Just my opinion, of course.

Linux has been trying for decades. Remember crappy Wine?

The simple fact is there are literally millions of apps using Windows APIs.

Every new OS would have to emulate all the APIs, and at best you would get a Windows OS emulator which rather defeats the point of a new OS. Keeping the emulator up to date would be a nightmare

Windows has now given up on directly running android apps. The only practical way of running android apps is to use an android emulator - and as above a nightmare to keep up to date.

Windows proprietary information may be part of the equation but only a part of the equation.

People forget that MS's real cash cows comes from corporate systems and no way would MS allow 3rd parties access to those tools.

There are also legal issues e.g. if 3rd party OSs emulated Wndows APIs, would they be breaking copyright etc. I have no actual idea of the legal issues but I could see it being a minefield.

However, that is not to say new OSs will not compete with Windows in the future but they will need to be a real game changer e.g. a holographic UI like on Agents of Shield. (that is only one example of course - a new OS could take many forms).

It would take years and a massive investment.

So I cannot see anybody ever developing a new OS that truly would run all Windows apps.

Of course, there is always China......

The problem with monopolies is that the consumer does not benefit much. When there's healthy competition advances are more frequent, free enterprise reigns, innovation thrives, and technology gets exciting.

Either could I

If they do manage to develop an OS that would be better for gaming than Windows that in itself would be a tremendous achievement. There was a time when I did actively game on MSN GAMING ZONE but that was many moons ago. These days I just fiddle with computers and write books that never get published.
