Third Party Power Cable Durability And Dependable

Hello folks, I need to purchase a power cable for my Dell Inspiron laptop.
Dell Shop and BestBuy are kinda expansive. How reliable and durable are the Amazon third party power cables, for the laptop?

I’ll admit I have bought a few in the past, but for very old Dell laptops. But to be honest, how much do you save in comparison to the cost of a new laptop.

Are you just asking about using a third-party power adapter?

If so, some are better than others. However, it's hard to tell which are. I've used a half dozen aftermarket and a dozen originals over the years.

About 75% eventually die no matter who "made" them - OEM or Aftermarket. Some aftermarket last about as long as an OEM adapter. All eventually die IME. Some just stop providing power. Some have cheaper cord strain relief and they eventually crack, letting the cable housing crack and then it's time to go. Some have the case crack (heat) even though the components continue to operate. Some cases just separate and need to be re-glued.

Mostly what I've found is that the cheaper ones can throw a LOT of heat due to cheap components. I measured one that seemed particularly hot when used while charging and found it was 135 degrees. Still worked fine, FWIW. Still got tossed. I don't need fire hazards.

I'd probably buy something better than "the cheapest", but I don't know that you really get anything better for your money. Or, you can buy OEM... but the fact that there are so many companies selling aftermarket units tells you that they don't last forever either.

Same here...no issues.

As for the power cable, I prefer the 3-wire flat type, coils better when stored in the case. For the AC Adapter/charger I prefer the OEM's version, assures the proper amount of DC power is supplied and the plug will fit. An alternate would be the universal adapters that come with several tips for use on various machines.

A change, my last 2 Latitude Notebooks [a 13" 2-in-1 and a 14"] came with the USB-C type plug instead of the round ones, supports Thunderbolt.

Slightly OT, but not a good trend in my opinion. You lose a USB-C port to the power cable. A separate power connector keeps your ports open. But, as they say, here we are.

What is your question intended to be about? The whole PSU, i.e. "power brick", together with the mains cable? Or just the power cable, i.e. from the brick to the outlet?

I have a Kensington Portable 120W AC/DC Notebook Power Adapter Model 33197 that I've had for at least 10-12 years and it's lasted through three laptops. It came with a bunch of tips and is very compact and light, something key for packing it around on trips!.

I've used several aftermarket power adapters for my laptops over the years without any issue. I do stay away from the real cheap one's however. Your best bet if you're looking for an aftermarket one is do your research. Look at reviews and customer reviews before you buy one.
