I've noticed that zip files need to be unblocked, Bree. Not sure that all of 'em do, though.
My example was a .reg file, but in my experience virtually every file of any type I download needs to be unblocked. Even, as Kol12 points out, a SysInternals download from that small unknown web site known as docs.Microsoft.com.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I use it through WSSC, (Windows System Security Center Application), from kls-soft, have done for years and it handles the updates for everything every time you open it

Not for everyone as it also allows access to all the NirSoft Apps which can trip some AV due to the low level Hooks used by Nir Sofer

So which category does Eleven Forum come under? A 'potential problem' or 'simply unknown' ? :lmao:
What most people fail to realize is that this is Microsoft's slow but inevitable push to getting people to only trust software from the Store. They wanna play Apple and Google in their own ecosystem. If they could just say "No more win32 apps will be installed from anywhere else," they'd do it. However, there would be a small riot if they did that right now and they know Linux beckons harder and harder every day.

Small riot, my foot! There would be a complete uprising. And I'd be one of the first.

I have apps and programs I use daily, and I will not change to something from the Store! In fact, in my experience, when I go looking for something I use, and know it's in the Store, nine times out of ten, it's hidden! And if I choose something that I think might do, it's usually totally inadequate for my needs.

IOW, I know what's in the Store is safe, but again, in my experience, not much of what's there is very useful. Just my NSH Opinion.

100% agreed. WSCC FTW, because it does both Sysinternals and NirSoft, and even has some other popular programs, to boot.

I don't know where you're getting that impression from. As far as I know MS will not prevent users from installing their software and make use only use things from the store.

You can set Windows to only allow apps from the Store. It happens more often than not, with newer installs that are not home built machines, too. They are trying.

They know they cannot succeed in it completely, but I really suspect (this is my own speculation) they will eventually push an edition that is Store only (and quite possibly to compete more directly with ChromeBooks, etc.).

The biggest problem with the Store is that even limited users can use it to install apps - which is why a lot of enterprises flat out block and remove it from their desktop clients. And as long as the majority of their income comes from businesses, you're right- they aren't going to remove the ability to install non-store products any time soon. Well, not in Pro and higher editions.

For Home? You never know. After all....

It's Microsoft. :lmao:

You can set .. or you can not set. See.. it works both ways and it's not a default. Odd how that works.

You loaded that comment with loads of speculation. Like this "they will eventually push an edition that is Store only (and quite possibly to compete more directly with ChromeBooks, etc.)."..

Not one in a hundred members here will know the reference you made with "Grandma's lye soap," but I sure do. It was one of the first songs I sang in talent contests as a little kid, 65-70 years ago:

Now you remember Grandma's lye soap,
Good for everything in the home;
And the secret was in the scrubbing,
It couldn't suds and wouldn't foam.

(And much more)

I don't know where you're getting that impression from. As far as I know MS will not prevent users from installing their software and make use only use things from the store.
Heh, I got that impression by watching the business for the past 30 years from the inside, and from a bunch of people watching who've come to the same conclusion. The only people who haven't figured that out haven't been paying attention to Google, Apple and Amazon. Who have all set the course for the future. The only remaining system that won't go the route of the "App Store" is Linux, and that's because OSF pretty much makes it impossible.

So, if Linux is immune to such developments, how would you explain all of the 'App Stores' that are increasingly being included as standard with Linux distributions. No, I'm not talking about the main distribution repositories, it's the default and activated app store 'features', such as Canonical's Snapcraft in Ubuntu; and then, of course there's Appimage and Flathub etc. promoting the 'simplicity' of installing there own variations of 'universal apps'.

Both are valid arguments. But. there is also another factor to consider.

The use of an application repository / app store also allows the store owner to control how apps are developed and pushed to users. I don't mean automatic updates, I mean from a centralized location, with defining structure, and with the disallowing of potentially problematic procedures and such that the end user will have no idea how to fix. For the average user (not any of us in here, for the most part - I'd not call the vast majority of people in here since the beginning average by any means) software should just work. Having to hunt down little issues and troubleshoot them is not what most users want. App repositories and app stores help minimize that aspect of manual installs as you get what you need for your system without the user having to go hunt it down on their own.

Yes, manual installs are clearly capable of doing that as well. But they also have to be coded correctly to do it correctly - instead of brute-force installing a required runtime, the app should check to see if the run time is already installed, and only install if it is not installed - but not all apps do this, some just brute-force install. You might say "But how is this a problem?" And I would respond that if the installer is brute-forcing an installation of an older version, and you already have a newer version / update for the run time, that other apps are specifically looking for, and it gets over-written by the older, until another process can apply the update again, other apps may (temporarily) be broken.

But in order to be a store app / repository app, the application dev has to follow certain rules to make the app system compliant - like, say, not brute-forcing the install, but only installing / calling for the install when necessary.

This is but one tiny example of why these repositories and stores make sense. They also provide for more direct monetization fo application by devs, with the owners getting a cut, of course, which devs and users might think is unfair - but the app stores and repositories also provide hosting, versioning, pre-req compliance and a whole slew of other things that the dev no longer has to worry about (and, for the most part, code for), so an argument can be made that the cut is only fair also. Personally, I don't have a say one way or another, because similar arguments can be made that the cuts are also unfair, particularly for apps that don't make a lot / cost a lot.

But I can bet one thing: more users out there, particularly the less savvy ones, would prefer to have the Store manage it all - because of all the things they now no longer have to worry about themselves. Compatibility, pre-requisites, updating, etc.
