I'm considering buying a new laptop and giving my Acer Spin laptop to my son. I upgraded my Acer Spin laptop from Home to Pro through the MS Store. If I remember correctly the upgrade switched me to the Enterprise version. I know I did have to call MS support and they had me enter the Generic Pro key. If I give this laptop to my son, would it be possible for him to sign in to his own MS account and delete all of my user accounts and keep the Pro version activated? I know that the Pro license can't be transferred to another device.

Maybe you can try swapping the drive between 2 laptops before activating the new laptop?
If your pro license is attached to your microsoft account, the new laptop should get activated to pro and just consider it as a hardware upgrade.

Just use reset my pc, it will reinstall OS but will initially reinstall Home assuming pc has bios embedded home key. Then go to activation menu and click change product key and enter generic key below an it willl reupgrade to Pro.

Assuming you want to give the laptop to your son with some or all installed software, the process is really simple.
  1. If required, uninstall apps & software you do not want to give to him
  2. Check the Public user folders, deleting all personal data possibly stored there
  3. Delete other personal data, for instance on other internal drives
  4. Create a new user account for your son, irrelevant if local or MS account
  5. Make his new user account local admin
  6. Sign in to his new user account
  7. Delete your original user account
That's it. Activation preserved, and if his account is MSA, device will be added to this account.

I will be transferring the few paid programs to my new laptop. The lap came with Windows 10 home so the key should be in the bios. Seeing how I did an upgrade to Pro through the MS store I wasn't sure if the Pro key could be transfered to a new owner even though it's the same device. I think I remember that I read the key was only good for the device it was used on. Reading your post makes me feel better. I didn't want to waste a Pro key if I didn't have to.

I was surprised that when I did the upgrade from the store that the key was for the Enterprise version. I check on my MS account and my email to try and find my activation key. I finally called MS support and they had me use VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T to activate.

At the moment, the laptop has a PRO digital license. Doing the "account swap" as I suggested naturally keeps that license.

To completely clean it before giving it to your son, clean installing PRO would be the best solution. Complete reset is an alternative, but first, it takes extreme long, even on faster laptops, and second, as Martin mentioned earlier, it would restore the HOME edition, needing an unnecessary step then to upgrade to PRO.

I'm going to try your method. It sounds easy and on the line of what I did when we gave him the All-in-One desktop. I will be deleting my user account and all of my files. In fact, the only personal files are a few saved passwords for logging in to a few websites.

Just remember: the most common mistake in scenarios like yours is, that old owner removes his admin account BEFORE making sure, that the new owner's account is also an admin account. That cannot be stressed too much!

I now try my best to not forget to never delete an old admin account until I test that the new admin account works. I did it once and had to use my Macrium image to get me going again.

I want to thank everyone for their help. I forgot that the laptop was on the Insider build. Win 11 to be exact. I couldn't find an image of before I switched to the Insider builds. I had to download and make a Windows 10 install disk. For some reason that turned into a nightmare. I kept getting an error. I kept trying different USB flash drives until I found one that worked. After making the Window 10 install disk everything fell into place. Windows 10 installed and after it finished all I had to do after I verified to MS who I was to use the generic key to activate Windows 10 Pro. I'm very happy that I didn't have to waste the money I spent on upgrading to Windows 10 Pro.

Nice!
I built my cousin a new PC and gave to me her old i7 Dell PC. I installed Win 10 Pro on it and gave it to a friend who's daughter needs a PC for virtual schooling.

The best way to recycle old computers. I know MS said that Windows 10 support will end October 14, 2025 but I truly believe that they will extend security updates past that date. There are so many computers running Windows 10 that can't be upgraded to Windows 11.

I am sure somebody will come up with either a pcie or USB add-on to meet the Windows 11 requirement.
