Trouble Shutting Down Remote PC

Hello,

I have a remote PC running Windows 11 Pro. I've used Windows Update to ensure I have latest updates.
When I try to shut down the computer remotely, it hangs for a while and sometimes tries to reconnect, other times it just hangs and, eventually shuts down, but I am not sure it's actually shutting down.

Are there any settings that can fix this? I've tried Microsoft Support but their AI gives me the wrong answer, there's no setting in the Group Policy Editor that AI says is there.
I've also tried unchecking on my local PC the setting to "reconnect if connection is lost", but that doesn't help either.

Thanks,
Jerry

Hi & welcome,
You are not mentioning how you try to shutdown the machine, is it from Remote Desktop or the command line on your system?

The command line is a sure way to get things done.

Code:
Shutdown /m \\MachineName /f

Then to double check if the system is down, try to ping it using its IP address.

Code:
ping MachineName -n 3

I recently replaced a slow remote PC at an observatory with a faster one. When I would shut down the old PC using the standard Windows shutdown button (no command line, etc.) it would immediately shut down (power icon-shutdown).

But with the new PC it either tries to reconnect or it hangs. It eventually seems to shut down but I'm not sure.

I've read that Windows 11 has a new bug affecting this very issue.

I've tried various things like using the command line, making a suggested change in the group policy editor and holding down the SHIFT key when shutting down. None of these things resolve the problem.

I can shutdown any of my other three Win11 computers using RDC simply by using the Windows shutdown.

Well, so could I with the computer I just replaced. But that's not the case now. This is a REMOTE computer, a bit more complex than shutting down a local machine.

I have a remote mini PC used for a video controller, I have no problem controlling it using RDC, including the shutdown. My only problem is when I shut it down I have to go to it to turn it back on!

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.
