Windows 11 Pro - version 24H2
With all of the websites out there for downloading software (productivity, system repair, games, etc.), it's hard to know which sites won't try to download malware, computer viruses, etc. Aside from ElevenForum, what websites do you trust? I think MajorGeeks is a good website, but I haven't used it much.

All files downloaded from any website need scrutiny because it’s not always about the website but also the file and the person supplying it. Also, files can be manipulated before or maybe even after a site like Major Geeks get’s to it. I’ve detected a virus in files from all types of sites, reputable or otherwise.

It’s how you keep your PC protected. If you’re running an antivirus software, right click on anything you download and have it scan the file.

But sure, Major Geeks has always been relatively safe.

Direct from the Vendor is always good in my opinion.

Even trusted sites can become compromised. This is a common attack path for threat actors and APT groups. Compromise a trusted vendor and distribute malware. Usually these groups are targeting specific groups of victims but home users could be caught in the cross-hairs.

Sites where content is user curated or uploaded can be more susceptible to malware especially if there is no validation or content scanning on or after upload.

Makes sense. I hadn’t thought about scanning right after downloading a file but that sounds wise.

Depending on your software, it should happen automatically, but I scan regardless, Mike.

Softpedia maybe, but I hardly ever download anything myself. Only long known programs and they have their own website or github page.
