Trying to move Music folder to an M.2 SSD drive doesn't work

Hi,

I hope someone can put me on the right track. I have installed a new NVMe/M2 SSD (4TB). That went without a problem. I wanted to move the Music folder that that was on my D drive to the new new SSD.

I right clicked on the Music folder, Properties then Location. Clicked on Move, chose the drive and folder to move the music stuff into, got the standard "Do you want to move all of ...." etc.

I clicked on Yes, then got the following error message:

2024-02-07_001454.jpg

So what do I do with this? Any idea what I need to do?

I have also noticed that the folder I created on the SSD, disappeared. I copied and moved a few files into it, but as soon as I closed Explored, then reopened it, the entire Music folder had vanished. I could see on the drive properties that the files were still there, but I couldn't see them.

I have a PC running Windows 11 Pro, running on 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700KF 3.61 GHz, with 32GB RAM.

Thanks for your help.

Could you just use drag and drop, then delete the original folder on the first drive?

As the error message indicate, you can't move Music folder to that protected folder as that folder use for creation of system restore points.

In my opinion, never “Move” always manually copy and then remove the original folder, in case of situations like these at least you know your files are still where they started.

You can't copy /move anything into the system volume information folder, try copying /moving to the root of that external drive.

I always make a new folder, name it something like "old music" so I can keep track of it, and then just drag and drop the files into it. I never transfer always copy and I am talking about about 5 TB worth of music and video files I just copied to an external SSD.

Is this the Music folder that you moved from your User Folder? If it is try moving it back to the original location first.

I never move I just copy. I have copied about 5 TB of media files. I always find in easier to copy to an externally mounted drive. With My Mac Studio I have the APFC issue but I get around that by copying over FTFS files to exFAT. What I am finding is my personal Music and video files are becoming more and more irrelevant. With some exceptions most of the music and mostly Anime stuff is available in better copies than what I have on my storage drives at places like Apple TV+, Apple Music, Soundcloud, Band Camp, Crunchyroll etc. I

Is your current music folder located at the default Windows location? If it is, make sure you "drill down" by going to the c: drive, users, your user folder and then right click on the Music folder and select properties and select Location tab and try changing from there. Of course if this is already what you are doing, ignore my blather.
