Apps Turn On or Off Automatically Save Session State for Notepad in Windows 11

  • Staff
Notepad_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off Notepad automatically saving the session state for your account in Windows 11.

Notepad is a fast and simple text editor that can be used to view, edit, and search through plain text documents instantly.

Starting with the Notepad version 11.2307.22.0 update, Notepad will start automatically saving your session state allowing you to close Notepad without any interrupting dialogs and then pick up where you left off when you return. Notepad will automatically restore previously open tabs as well as unsaved content and edits across those open tabs. Saved session state does not impact any of your files, though, and it is still your choice whether to save or discard unsaved changes to files anytime you close a tab.

You can turn this feature off in app settings if you would prefer to have a fresh start every time you open Notepad.

Microsoft is rolling out this experience to Windows Insiders in the Beta, Canary, and Dev channels.

EXAMPLE: Notepad automatically saves your progress

Notepad_autosave.png

Here's How:

1 Open Notepad.

2 Click/tap on the Settings (gear) button. (see screenshot below)

Notepad_autosave-1.png

3 In Settings, click/tap on When Notepad starts to expand it open. (see screenshot below)

4 Select (dot) Open content from the previous session (on - default) or Open a new window (off) for what you want.

That's it,

I wonder why I don't have this option even though I'm on Notepad version 11.2307.27.0, a later one than the one shown in the screenshot here.
On Notepad Settings, I have only the first 4, up to the "Opening files" one.

Thank you! I had the impression that since I had a later app version, I should have this. But, I guess, that's not exactly how versions work in this case.

u will messed up and get "update killer" if you try to do manually.

Hello, and welcome. :alien:

Currently this feature is only available in Insider builds of Windows 11. It's not quite yet available for public builds.
I wonder if someone at Microsoft actually noticed that saving backups of notepad text files in some arcane, obfuscated temp folder actually isn't what every user wants.

Perhaps you didn’t consider that some people did want this and actually think that it is a great asset. I noticed you cranky in your other post also. But that’s fine I guess.
This thread helps you to learn how to turn it off, so in fact, you don’t have to want it or use it (y)
