System Turn On or Off Night Light in Windows 11

  • Staff
Night_light_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off night light for your account in Windows 11.

Your display emits blue light—the kind of light you see during the day—which can keep you up at night. To help you get to sleep, turn on the night light and your display will show warmer colors at night that are easier on your eyes.

The night light strength level is for the color temperature in Kelvin. You can set a strength level between 0 (6500K) to 100 (1200K) for whatever is comfortable to your eyes.

You can turn on Schedule night light. Then, either select Sunset to sunrise, or select Set hours and enter custom times for the night light to automatically turn on and off.

Night light isn't available if your device uses certain drivers (DisplayLink or Basic Display).

Night Light settings are stored in the registry keys below for the current user.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CloudStore\Store\DefaultAccount\Current\default$windows.data.bluelightreduction.bluelightreductionstate

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CloudStore\Store\DefaultAccount\Current\default$windows.data.bluelightreduction.settings

The Night Light feature requires the Connected Devices Platform Service to be enabled, running, and set to automatic.

Hi Shawn
After the 22H2 updates KB5017389 preview and KB5017271 net I no longer can activate Night Light and it crashes when trying it (see attached). I deleted the reg keys you mention above without results (I put the 2 reg keys back). The issue has been reported by others on the web: Other reports on the web
I will also send a feedback to MS about this, any suggestions?
Thanks
Frank

Hello Frank, :-)

It appears to be a bug in that build. Hopefully, it will get sorted in the next update.

Thanks Shawn,
I was about to reinstall my Intel display driver debacle again but now agree that it is probably due to a bug in the last update, also getting a lot more event errors (Kernel Tracing, etc.) in 22H2 like with the W10 earlier versions, looks like we are going back in time (instead of progress)

Hi Shawn
I solved my Night Light crashing: Nothing to do with Windows updates, I found that I disabled Connected Devices Platform Service and that disables also (crashes) Night Light (SettingsHandlers_Display.dll). It is working now.
