Hi, all.
I have an Amazon Echo Dot coming. Using Alexa, I know you can set it up to turn on your PC through the Wake on Lan feature. Here's a video I found on it:

Does this look safe? If not, does anyone have any advice on how I might accomplish this more easily?

I put this in the Network and Internet section because the only way I know to do this is through the Internet. If it's placed incorrectly, please move it.

Thanks!

EDIT: I abandoned this for an internal timed switch connected to a smart plug via micro USB - USB cable and then connected to my power switch posts on my motherboard. See below for more. This idea was introduced by badrobot.

@jvickers My daughter has taken ours to her house, so when I visit and she is not about I always ask it for a wake up alarm at 3AM, revenge is sweet

Boys and their toys...I gave up trying to figure out the phenomenon 40 years ago. @The-Hive If you want to get another one for yourself there's an early prime day deal right now for 60% off for Echo Dot (4th generation). Then mail your daughter the bill.

I must be older than I thought. Clicking the mouse button or hitting a key on the keyboard is good enough for me. I also like to procrastinate. I purchased a Echo Show and 5 wireless security cameras and they're still in they box they were shipped in.

I must be older than I thought.
It's a matter of mind over matter. Keep thinking "I'm as good as I was when I was 30". It works....for about 30 seconds until your sometimers kicks in and you forget your train of thought. :D

I find it happening more and more. The other day I went outside to get something from my shed. When I got there I had to stop and think about what I wanted. :)

Funnily enough I've been wondering about this. We have three echo shows and an echo dot! The echo shows were great for hands free video calls during lockdowns. Sounds a bit excessive I know. We first had an echo dot. The first small echo show was bought as a bedside alarm clock. Then stepson wanted one for his room. Then got the bigger one for downstairs. Then got the smart bulbs etc. Everything is linked to Alexa (smart gadgets on a separate wifi guest network with it's own key for security) - except the computers! Off to look at your video ...........

I must be older than I thought. Clicking the mouse button or hitting a key on the keyboard is good enough for me. I also like to procrastinate. I purchased a Echo Show and 5 wireless security cameras and they're still in they box they were shipped in.
I know that feeling - we got ring doorbells and then never charge them up! Also linked to the echo show. They're quite good - you can see whose coming to your door/house from your phone while away on holiday (security). Not much good if you don't charge them up. We get people standing there pressing the bell and nothing happens lol.

So, to accomplish this, I hooked up a relay switch to the motherboards power switch headers in parallel with the PC case' power button (so I can still power it on manually by pressing the power button). The relay switch is then powered by a 5v charger plugged into a smart outlet. I am controlling the smart outlet via voice command to switch on to activate the relay switch (close position) and switch off automatically (open position) after about 3 seconds. This serves like a momentary switch. The rest is just a routine setup on Alexa. It sounds complicated but it is really very simple.

This is not about laziness. It's more of just a fun project. Putting pieces together and make it work without lifting a finger.
I also find it very convenient when I am already lying in bed at night and my daughter comes in to tell me "Dad, your PC is still on". Alexa usually saves my back from getting up to go back to the computer room. :D

Here is a spare USB powered relay switch I bought off Amazon (micro-SD card is for size comparison):

I would love to do this as I could maintain my home laptop whilst away but not leave it on permanently.

However, it is sad that few pcs have WOWLAN (Wakeup On Wireless LAN).

I actually found a way of emulating WOWLAN by connecting pc to a secondary local router vian an ethernet wifi bridge linked to main router, so pc thought I was using ethernet, not wifi and used WLAN.

Unfortunately it was a bit flakey and I had to reboot routers periodically. I guess with smart plugs that Alexa can be turned on or off over internet, this would be less of an issue.

The one problem I could never truly solve is if pc became totally powered down e.g. power cut, I could not restart it without physicall pressing on button to do a cold start.

Even with UPS systems you still need to occasionally switch of pc completely if it has crashed. In the end, Windows consumer versions are not designed to run 24/7.

This is why I use a relay switch that can physically hard reset or restart the PC remotely via smart plug. To do a hard reset, just leave the smart plug on for 3 to 5 seconds and then turn it off. It can be done by using the app if you are away from home.

Not easy to do for a laptop though.

It won't make sense with a laptop. I usually bring my laptop with me.
I have two - travel one very light, low power etc.

Other is much more powerful but much more expensive.

Never use desktops.

So you actually have not built a PC yet? It is so much fun and very rewarding. I usually use my laptop when I am just away. That's why I only bought a 14" one so it won't be too heavy to lug around.

You have an awesome setup. I fear your skills are far above mine. I'm not even sure how I'd even start. Plus, that would mean opening up my computer, wouldn't it? I try to avoid that because, well, I'm lazy. :D
