10/11 dual boot
ver. 21H2

First thing, how do I set it so that ALL windows open maximized? I've went in to the properties and set all to open maximized, yet everything still opens "restored down".

The other, I want to add a shortcut to a document to the taskbar, it's a document I'm in and out of 2 to 5 times a day, In W10, while it was open I right clicked, and then clicked "Pin to taskbar". But that option is not even present.

I'm sure on both of these I'm overlooking something. I managed to figure out most of the other important stuff, I'm sure there will be more.

Thank you for your help and advice. You guys are great.

Is this site going to get the,, I don't remember what it is called, on the W10 forum, give kudos, or credit, or karma or whatever. I would love to be able to do that.

Open the app you use and pin the app itself to the taskbar. I'll use Notepad as an example.

Open your document. After you've closed the app, right-click on it's icon on the taskbar, a jumplist of its recently opened documents will appear. You can now pin that important document to the jump list so that it will always be the at the top of the list.

Here I have done that with Notepad. Click the pin that appears when your mouse is over the document to pin it.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. It's already here, assuming I am understanding you correctly.

At the bottom right, of the post that you want to credit, hover over the 'Like Icon'. Then chose your poison. ;)

In descending order, from left to right. Left, being the highest. Just click on what you want awarded.

@RobbyK , in addition to what WXC has said, on Ten Forums they are called 'Reputation' points, and count towards awarding badges to the recipient. Here they are called 'Likes'. The first three count (in descending order from the left) towards a member's 'Reaction score,' visible in their Profile and earning badges here, the three smileys are just for passing a comment, such as 'Ha, Ha!' and don't add to the Reaction score.

@Bree thanks, I can see how this method would let you pin more at one time, but did the engineers sit around trying to find new ways of making things more complicated? I"m starting to like 11 less and less. Visually it has eye candy, but usability wise, it's more like Windows 8. Change for the sake of change not to improve the product.

REPUTATION, why couldn't I think of that. I mean I could have just opened 10 Forums in another tab and looked now that I think of it. I do like the smiley thing though.

Jumplists aren't new. These app jumplists, and the ability to use them on a pinned app's icon on the taskbar, have been there since Win7 at least. The jumplists are available with a right-click anywhere you can see an icon for an app, the Start All apps list, for example.

I have zero jump lists unless the items are pinned in Build 22000.100!

You should have them everywhere there's an icon for an app, I do....

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Nevermind! My machine is so hacked to hell, I can't even get Notepad to open a .txt file or make it default!!!
I think I did somethin weird to uninstall the Store Notepad and port the old one over..., or something like that...,
... all other jump lists are populating, though! (y)

@Bree I'm not really complaining about the jumplist so much as in w10 I had my document pinned straight to the taskbar, not in a jumplist. On the enclosed pic see the document "Abigail", imagine it on the taskbar beside the OpenOffice icon. But can't do that anymore. I think most of the stuff I don't like right now, I'll get used to and may like better than 10 once that happens. But I remember thinking several times, "that just complicates things in order to look good". You think I would be used to that by now, I've been doing the preview build thing since at least W7. maybe before that was just too many years ago.

Up to and including Windows 10 the taskbar was a function of explorer.exe. For W11 it has its own separate .exe. A lot of features that we take for granted are missing, pinning a document there is just one of them. Hopefully MS will take note of feedback from Insiders and restore some of them before W11 goes to RTM. That is, after all, one of the purposes of the Insider program.

I don't remember being able to pin a single document directly to the Taskbar!
Only way I know of is, change the document to an .exe and back...
