Two versions of Firefox on new laptop, how to remove one?

That would work, but since I never use synch and don't want to sign into an account in order to use it, then the way I posted up above would be the way to do it.

Firefox Synch is something different. The method I suggested saves the backup file locally and is updated frequently. No account is required.

That link you supplied says you need to use sync in order to create a Firefox backup file. When I pick Settings - Sync I get this:

And it's saying I then need to sign in in order to access sync and create a backup

That's what appears. I don't see any way to do it otherwise.

I don't think it does. I set this up for a couple of clients just last week so I'm familiar with it. At no point did I use sync to create or login to an account etc.

Underneath your first screenshot, scroll down a bit and you should find what I'm talking about. If you can't, then type backup into the search bar at the top.

If you still can't find it then I don't know what's going on with your Firefox.

This has always worked for me.
  • Uninstalled Firefox
  • Reinstalled Firefox
  • Run Firefox the first time so it creates a new profile folder
  • Find the new profile folder and delete its contents
  • Copy the contents of the original saved profile folder into the new one
Note this assumes the Firefox versions are close to the same. If the versions are very different then there may be a problem doing it this way.

Once I did what you described but the Firefox versions were far apart and had some incompatibilities. I think I tried to downgrade to an earlier version and had a warning that the profile was from a newer version. So, yes, it is better if you do that with the same or newer version of Firefox.

All you have to do is delete compatibility.ini from the profile folder as that contains what version you are running.

Delete that file then Firefox will not complain about your version and want you to refresh Firefox.

That file is recreated when you run Firefox.
