The next LTS is 26.04. Definitely looking forward to that one.
It is expected to be released in April or May next year.

if you are running the LTS in the system update settings
enable Ubuntu Backports

this keeps the system up to date without a full upgrade
until the next LTS is released.

Gave up on Ubuntu years ago -- Canonical is a HIDEOUS company. It makes Goldman Sachs seem like the most benevolent human supporting company on the planet !!! and if you believe that then you don't belong on this planet !!.

I've no issue with private companies wanting to make a living and stockholders wanting profits -- after all we all need our pensions when we retire and Govts usually SPEND rather than generate money -- but there are limits on how this is achieved and businesses like G.S have IMHO crossed the line.

These days I prefer by a universe Fedora (backed by IBM and RedHat - huge decent software companies) for leading edge / experimental stuff, ArchLinux for "Roll your own type of approach", and for 100% long term decent stability the old DEBIAN particularly the LTS version.

Ms itself is also a decent company for its workforce -- believe it or not !!! and if Windows didn't exist who knows what todays world would be like -- I think a lot worse in spite of all the problems today. Windows for all its faults can run on almost every piece of hardware thrown at it and almost every possible application (although as a long time Linux user many apps are better on that platform --not all though).

I think also these days people should pay a bit more attention to the type of companies behind software they might like to download and use and choose wisely.

Cheers

Nothing wrong with Mint -- probably a good one for Windows Users to try - especially when beginning -- easy to install as a VM too.

While there's nothing 'wrong' with Mint and similar widely used derivatives of the mainstream Linux releases, they do still seem to be staunchly allied to the Intel/AMD market and have not, so far, shown any sign of addressing the substantial growth in ARM64 (primarily Apple Silicon/Qualcomm Elite) based hardware, despite the fact that most of their 'parent' distros have already made that transition and now provide relatively mature ARM 64 releases. If they don't wise up soon.......

I flashed my usb drive using balenaEtcher from the iso file to install Mint Cinnamon straight to my desktop bypassing VMWare.

So now I can either boot into Windows or Linux Mint.

There are so many features on Mint that I have barely scratched the surface.

Now I am trying to install MacOS Sequoia on my VMWare Workstation. I am not sure whether it will work. If it does, it will give me a choice of 3 oses - Windows, Linux and MacOS to choose from.

Removed macOS and replaced it with Zorin.

This is Zorin OS. It is nothing special. Ubuntu is better.
I will just keep it for a couple of days on this Dell Inspiron laptop and then try Fedora (highly recommended by jimbo) when it is out of beta.
I need to build up my confidence first before going for it. :-)

Mint is a must keep, as feature wise, it way better than the other distros I have tried. That’s why I installed it directly to my desktop.

Okay, you must have your reason.
I will try KDE as well. You mean the KDE Plasma?
Does it automatically install Fedora Media writer?

I suggest for these sorts of discussions -- use a 'Nix forum. I'm happy discussing stuff re-Linux on a Windows Virtualisation forum for either running Windows on a 'Nix host or Linux VM's on a Windows host - but for complex strategies like how to install the OS etc - that really doesn't belong here.

Anyway here's my desktop on a KDE test system running a Windows VM taking an image of the W11 system on a VM running under KVM/QEMU virtualisation.

You are absolutely right and I apologize for keeping this thread alive for so long. This will be my last post in this thread.

I have installed KDE and I can understand your sentiment. It has a feel of modernity as opposed to other distros that are somewhat antiquated.

Anyway it has been a fruitful week for me.

My next project will be to trim my Windows 10 Pro version 1903 along the lines of litepc on my HP EliteBook.

Have a great weekend everybody!

my big problem issues with these are sounds... and bluetooth... otherwise Ubuntu is fine..
How are you running Ubuntu -- if it's on a Windows Host using HYPER-V any sound is a problem for recent modern Linux Dustros as they now use Wayland instead of X11 / XORG for the video server. Most of Windows Host to GUEST (the VM) communication is done via the rdp protocol which is still a Microsoft proprietary app and is currently incompatable with Wayland. So sound is likely to be a problem on most distros using wayland,
Things like vmware wks and virtualbox have their own internal mechanisms for this but not being type 1 Hypervisors they are far less efficient.

The other problem with Hyper-V is that it requires exclusive ownership of attached devices which currently are only usb disks and cd/DVD's (either physical or via iso image) so sharing an audio card / speakers /blue tooth /other pci hardware etc between host and a NON windows guest is currently no good.

A Windows Host running a Windows Guest on HYPER-V can share built in audio and graphics though as part of the Windows main task (the Hypervisor).

You might be able to install some sort of vncserver or x-server on the host windows system to get round the problem- but then this needs some sort of x11-wayland bridge type of application on the guest. Too much trouble and far too technical to even think about bothering with. As for Native sound systems on linux - should work these days on pretty well all of them straight OOTB.

Cheers
